Mixed Nuts

Movie:
Mixed Nuts, originally released theatrically in 1994, was directed by Nora Ephron, who also co-wrote the film with her sister, Delia Ephron. The film stars Steve Martin (Phillip), Madeline Kahn (Mrs. Munchnik), Rita Wilson (Catherine), Robert Klein (Mr. Lobel), Anthony LaPaglia (Felix), Juliette Lewis (Gracie), Rob Reiner (Dr. Kinsky), Adam Sandler (Louie), and Liev Schreiber (Chris).

Phillip is the director of Lifesavers, a non-profit suicide hotline dedicated to helping people. On Christmas Eve, his landlord hands him an eviction notice, and he isn't sure how to break the news to Catherine and Mrs. Munchnik, his two co-workers. Despite this setback, he continues to battle on to keep the hotline open, even as the office is bombarded with a strange collection of people. But in helping these people, they may manage to help themselves.

Mixed Nuts is a hard movie to sum up, in that it is mostly a collection of smaller plots. It doesn't help any either that I found the movie to be rather unfunny and mostly dull. The film had its moments, but they were too few and far between. Acting all around is average, with Reiner's Dr. Kinsky getting the most laughs with his talk about pillows.

Picture:
Mixed Nuts is presented in both 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and, on the opposite side of the DVD, 1.33:1 full frame. The transfer has very little in the way of print defects, with only some slight marks showing up occasionally. There is some visible grain and some edge enhancement is also present. Colors throughout are generally well-saturated and vibrant, with accurate flesh tones and decent blacks.

Sound:
Mixed Nuts is presented in Dolby Digital 5.0, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and French. As the film is mainly dialogue driven, surrounds are rarely used for the exception of the film's score. The rear channels are devoted almost entirely to ambient noise. Dialogue is crisp and clean throughout, with no distortion that I detected. Optional subtitles are also available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Thai, and Korean.

Extras:
Extras include filmographies for Ephron, Martin, Kahn, Reiner, Sandler, and Wilson, and trailers for this film, Drowning Mona, Roxanne, and So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Summary:
Columbia Tristar hasn't really provided much in the way of extras, but the low MSRP of $19.95 certainly reflects that, and fans of the film should consider picking it up. Those unfamiliar with the film should definitely rent before purchasing. Rent it.
