Falling in Love

Movie:
Falling in Love, originally released theatrically in 1984, was directed by Ulu Grosbard. Starring in the film are Robert DeNiro (Frank) and Meryl Streep (Molly), with Harvey Keitel (Ed) and Dianne Wiest (Isabelle) in supporting roles.

On Christmas Eve, Frank and Molly meet by chance while shopping for books. Three months later, they meet again on the train to work and soon become friends. They coordinate their schedules so they ride to and from work together and also share lunches. As their friendship deepens, both begin to fall in love with the other. However, there's one problem – they are both already married.

Falling in Love is a predictable and rather slow-moving love story about two people falling for each other who are already married. DeNiro and Streep both pull off great performances though: they really add a complexity to the characters and react to the situation with caution (as real people should). Had the story been a bit more exciting or eventful, it probably would've been more enjoyable, but as is, not a lot happens.

Picture:
Falling in Love is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. The transfer is free from dirt and scratches, though specks do appear infrequently. There is also some light grain visible occasionally. Colors are mostly natural, though appear to be a bit faded in several scenes and generally lack vibrancy. Flesh tones are mostly accurate, but can be slightly too orange in several places. Blacks are decent throughout.

Sound:
Falling in Love is presented in Dolby 2.0 Stereo in English and French. The film is almost entirely dialogue driven, and as such, there's not much going on other than that. Background noise and the film's score sound adequate, though are rather unmemorable. Dialogue throughout is clean with no distortion. Optional English captions and subtitles are also available.

Extras:
There are no extras included.

Summary:
Paramount has provided an above average presentation of Falling in Love, though at a rather steep price point, considering the lack of extras. For those who haven't seen it, the film is worth a rental if you're a fan of the leads. Rent it.
