The Movie: I first saw the trailers for this movie last summer and thought it looked somewhat intriguing, so I attended it the first day it was released in theaters. I originally compared Brokedown Palace to Return to Paradise (one of my favorite movies) because there are many similarities. Upon watching this movie again on DVD, I see how far apart these movies are - the simple truth is one is a great movie, the other stinks. Brokedown Palace is the latter - it is unable to bring together an interesting plot and is so unbelievable and full of plot holes, the result is simply horrible.
The Picture: The picture is stunning - most likely because this movie was just recently released in theaters last year. Unfortunately, Fox decided against making this an Anamorphic transfer and at $35, I don't think there's going to be many of this DVD sold. The colors in Thailand are beautiful and there are no noticeable defaults in this disc.
The Sound: The sound, along with the picture is great. The DVD features both a 5.1 surround and Dolby surround track - and neither disappoint. There really isn't much to measure on the sound side due to the lack of explosions or loud sounds, but the subtle sounds come through great.
The Extras: Extras? Once again Fox delivers a mediocre movie with absolutely no extras - what's the point of paying $35 for a disc with no Anamorphic transfer and no extras? The movie certainly isn't worth that much. The disc does contain a trailer along with the standard cast bios and interactive menus, yada, yada.
Conclusion: In conclusion, what Fox has done is taken a mediocre (at best) movie, packaged it with no extras and no anamorphic transfer and tried to pawn it off at $35. I'd highly recommend against buying this disc and send Fox a message that they can't get away with trying to release a bare-bones disc and charging an arm and a leg.
