Keeping Up With the Kardashians: The Complete Second Season

Kim Kardashian, for those unaware, has ridden a friendship with Paris Hilton to stardom. Once she achieved her "celebrity" status, she has managed to keep herself there thanks to her famous rear (and if you forgot about that, the cover of the first season DVD, which has Kardashian sticking out her behind - is there as a reminder.)
"Keeping Up With the Kardashians" is a reality series on E! that focuses Kim and her family - siblings Robert, Kendall, Kylie, Kourtney, Khloe and parents Kris and Bruce. Kris was formerly married to the late Robert Kardashian, famed defense attorney. Bruce, on the other hand, is widely known for his Olympic success. Now, he walks around the house in the series like some sort of roommate, frowns at the antics of the other members of the family and occasionally announces that he is going out to fly his remote-control plane. In "Kardashian Family War", one of the funniest scenes of the season has Bruce flying his plane through the house as he walks into a serious discussion between Kris and Khloe. He contributes his opinion, then flies his plane out of the room and elsewhere into the house.
The series follows the misadventures of Kim and her family, as well as...well, it's mainly about Kim's career, with the family as supporting players. A fairly large part of the series is the business side of things between manager ("momager"? Oh wait, Dina Lohan apparently started that term - and while we're on the subject, thanks E! for canceling "Living Lohan") Kris and Kim, with some subplots about the other kids thrown in to give them some on-screen time.
The second season still isn't going to win any awards, but makes a couple of mild changes that makes the show click a bit more often. The biggest change is the series has moved its focus away from being entirely focused on Kim, and instead has given more time to Khloe, whose role is entirely to call out her other family members and push everyone's buttons - never is this more apparent than in the season opener, "Kim Becomes a Diva", which gives Khloe plenty of material as her sister's attitude begins to go far overboard.
The series also gives some screen time to brother Rob's relationship with Adrianne Bailon (of "Cheetah Girls" fame.) He also gets a giant tattoo of her name on his side (then breaks up with her after the third season after a bizarre argument where he gets upset with her for being messy after they move in together - guys should not get upset when girls are messy.) Kourtney starts her relationship with Scott, who is found to have cheated on her and manages, during his appearances on the series, to out-douche Spencer Pratt of "The Hills".
The three main sisters - Kourtney, Kim and Khloe - eventually tend to come together to support each other, but there are moments between the three are impressively catty and bratty. Kim, under the impression that she may have set up sister Khloe with a love match, smiles and notes that, if that occurs, then "she'll owe me for the rest of her life."
The series also opens out a bit, with episodes that see Khloe try to take up acting (and becomes amused at the intensity of the performers) and a finale where the sisters visit New Orleans and see the devastation that still remains from Katrina.

The DVD
VIDEO: "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" is presented by Lionsgate in 1.33:1 full-frame. The picture quality is just fine, as the full-frame image remained crisp and - at least throughout much of the series - clean. Colors look bright and well-saturated.
SOUND: The show's stereo soundtrack offers crisp, clear dialogue and bassy music.
EXTRAS: 5 deleted scenes (some of which are quite funny - one is an extended scene), Rob's video blog (3 min) and trailers. Unfortunately, no commentaries (which the first season set offered.)
Final Thoughts: Great television? No, but "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" manages to be mindless fun. The DVD set provides minimal extras, but fine audio/video quality.
