Red Shoe Diaries: The Game

The film:
This is the first DVD release from Showtime, a DVD that includes three episodes of their late-night adult drama "Red Shoe Diaries", a popular program from producer Zalman King. Suprisingly, this isn't just a basic edition of the show - it's actually quite an impressively done special edition, taking advantage of some of DVD's more impressive capabilities.
The quality of the DVD in terms of audio and video is what you would expect from a television program - the image is a full-frame picture that has generally good color, but feels a little soft at times. Some scenes seem a little too dark, and occasionally, there is some slight pixelation. The audio actually isn't that bad, with a strong, clear score and very clear dialogue.
What really impressed me was the extra features that are included with this release. First off, when we start the movie, the opening screen tells us to watch out for the "red shoe" symbols to pop up. These do occasionally pop up and when they do, they function like the "white rabbit" feature of "The Matrix" did, only here, when you click on them, you're taken to the rehersal footage of that particular scene. It's an extremely cool feature and one that I hope future titles will take advantage of in this way. Also on the disc is a commentary from producer Zalman King, who doesn't have too much to say. When he does talk he provides some interesting details about the production, but that's when he does talk - there are long periods without comments.
Next up is a trivia game where if you get the answer wrong, it tells you "wrong answer". If you get it right, you see the scene from the program where the answer comes from. Also included is a photo gallery that has pictures from the program - the gallery forwards through the pictures on its own, and has some music playing out in the background. Bonus, alternate footage takes a look at more rehersals for various scenes. There are 5 bonus scenes included in their own little menu.
In addition, there is part of an early draft of the screenplay, and viewers can skip from the draft to the final scene. Viewers can also play an animated "red shoe diaries" game, read a text "diary" or look at some small bios for the actors. There's also web-links. The main menu is animated and scene selection is available.
"Red Shoe Diaries" definitely isn't for everyone, but taking a look at this early copy of what Showtime has done for their first DVD, they definitely have done quite a few things right. If you're a fan of the show, you'll definitely be pleased with the effort they've made with this disc.
