Phantasm: SE
The classic horror movie Phantasm finally comes to DVD in this extras packed Special Edition. The Phantasm disc contains a plethora of extras that makes the disc worthwhile. The movie is somewhat hokey (1979 release), but it has become a cult classic over the years and it's easy to see why. The main story is that there's a mysterious funeral parlor in town where Mike, severely attached to his brother after the death of his parents, sees a mysterious man only known as the "Tall Man" lift a coffin by himself and place it in a hearse. Upon further investigation, Mike finds that strange things are going on inside the parlor.
Considering this movie is from the late 70's it looks extremely good on DVD. The Sound and Picture transfers are superb with no noticeable defects. Although the repeat viewing is diminished once the outcome is revealed, it's a great movie to watch on a stormy night when you're in the mood for a scary movie - you just have to see the funeral parlor's security system.
Featuring a great Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 soundtrack and 1.85:1 widescreen presentation, the disc also comes loaded with extras. Including:
• Commentary by director Don Coscarelli and actors Michael Baldwin, Reggie Bannister, and Bill Thornbury
• Production notes
• Theatrical trailer(s), TV spot(s)
• Ten Minutes of Deleted Scenes
• Behind-the-Scenes Footage
• 1979 Promotional Interviews
• Introduction by Angus "The Tall Man" Scrimm
• Photo Gallery: Includes Original & International Theatrical Posters & Lobby Cards
The extra features are really what make this disc. Also the fact that there are multiple sequels which would make a great collection, makes this a DVD worth seeing at least once. I enjoyed the film, being able to look back at one of the films of the year I was born. It's amazing how much we've progressed and how much information that can be stored on a tiny disc.
