The Movie:

More music video than movie, "The Replacement Killers" is one of those films where the plot exists to tie together a number of intense action sequences. It may not have been the best choice for star Chow Yun-Fat's first American film, but there's no denying that his performance carries this film - he's got an intensity that's nothing less than stunning.

He co-stars with Mira Sorvino, who is making her action debut as Meg Coburn, an ace document forger. When Yun-Fat's assassin Lee refuses to go through with a revenge plot against a police officer, he goes to Coburn to get documents to get away from the possible consequences of his actions. While he's there, the consequences appear in a legion of assassins coming after him. Now, the two are forced to stick together to get out of trouble, and in usual action movie form, it's whether they like it or not.

The movie comes in at a little less than 90 minutes and it's a constant string of nicely staged action sequences. Forgettable stuff, but it's stylish (almost overly so) and with all of the work that obviously went into the look of the film, it's never unwatchable. Again, Chow Yun-Fat's performance is outstanding and even Sorvino isn't that bad in her first try at an action role. It's fine as far as action goes, but it doesn't go much farther than that.

The DVD

VIDEO: An absolutely stunning transfer, and easily some of the very best work from a studio known for the very best efforts in the DVD format. The 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer is consistently sharp and crystal clear, with remarkable detail. Colors are eye-popping, vibrant and very well-saturated, with absolutely no problems whatsoever. Black level is excellent and flesh tones are accurate, as well.

The few very minor traces of shimmering are absolutely overshadowed by the otherwise excellent work from Tristar. No pixelation, either, and the print used is in absolutely perfect condition, with no marks or scratches. Outstanding.
SOUND: Just what you'd expect from a movie like this. Stunning amounts of gunfire surround the listener from all sides, and the movie's score sounds remarkable, thumping away with solid bass. There are a number of scenes throughout the movie that will show off any sound system. Dialogue is perfect, easily heard among all the chaos. Excellent stuff.

MENUS:: Basic and non-animated, but still easily navigated.

EXTRAS: Trailer and short featurette.
