Synopsis Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jefferson (Mekhi Phifer) is a young and simple man who is wrongly accused of murdering a white storeowner & is subsequently sentenced to death. In his defense attorney's argument, Jefferson is a likened to nothing more than a "hog", an unintelligent farm implement to be used for any service other than cerebral. Repeatedly, his manhood & humanity are excised and all that remains is a shadow of a man. His only relative is his grandmother who has spent her life raising him. After hearing the arguments regarding her grandson's punishment she resigns herself to the fact that if they are going to kill her grandson, they will kill a man & not a Hog. In an attempt to accomplish this task, she enlists the services of Grant Wiggins (Don Cheadle) the professor of a small dirt floor school for the black children of this 1948 Louisiana backwater. The burden is upon Wiggins to attempt to transform Jefferson into the man everyone knew him to be before, he is executed. He must do this all the while facing his own demons of inadequacy & resentment. A lesson before dying is a highly charged story that is not one to be missed.

Audio: The audio presented on the disc is English Dolby Surround. It conveyed the overall feel of the film quite nicely. There really wasn't a great need for a 5.1 platform as there would have been no additional effects heard given the film's theme/topic.

Video: The movie is presented in a 4:3 full frame format. As it was a made for HBO production, that explains the format. I really hate full frame productions but I found myself not minding quite as much with this film. Amazingly enough, it did not detract from my ability to enjoy the film.

Extras: The only extra on the disc is a preview/trailer for the HBO production Introducing Dorothy Dandridge starring Halle Berry. No other extras were included.

Overall: This is a film I kept missing on HBO. Every time I'd try to watch it, I'd come in either on the end or the middle! That having been said, I am really glad I got to finally see the film & greatly enjoyed it. While the film is solid in almost every detail, I couldn't really get the emotional attachment they were looking for until moments before the end, and then, my attachment was short lived. The subject matter has been covered many times before, so there is nothing new in this particular interpretation. The real beauty of the film lies in the growth of the characters throughout the feature. Which was the point of the picture. With an all-star cast it's pretty hard to miss & they were all right on target with their performances. Don Cheadle, Mekhi Phifer, Cicely Tyson! All, incredibly gifted actors who lent the needed realism to make this film fly. This is a compelling film that's worth a look-see.
