Thrill Ride - The Science of Fun (IMAX)

Movie
Thrill Ride takes you on an adventure through the science of thrill rides and what exactly makes them thrilling! Starting with a quick tour through the history of the roller coaster, the film spends the majority of the time looking at the wizardry that goes into creating the modern film based thrill ride (Like Universal Studio's Back to the Future Ride).

Thrill Ride was shot to be shown in an IMAX theater so unfortunately many of the really great aspects of the film don't translate well on to the smaller home theater screen. Even so, the film was very entertaining, and after watching all those thrill rides I found myself planning my next trip to an amusement park.

Picture
Since Thrill Ride was shot for IMAX the master film source is breathtaking 70MM which is transferred beautifully here on to DVD. As with other IMAX films Thrill Ride is presented in full frame, which makes it slightly less enjoyable when trying to watch it on a widescreen TV, but the pristine transfer more than makes up for it.

Audio
The 5.1 Dolby Digital track on Thrill Ride is excellent, it truly provides the real experience for this film helping bridge the gap created by trying to watch an IMAX film on the small screen. There's a scene in thrill ride that explains the effects of sound and how surround sound can sound three dimensional which is definitely one of the highlights of the film.

Extras
Unfortunately Thrill Ride is pretty light on extras. The key feature is a making-of documentary which unfortunately is more like a promotional featurette than a documentary.

Conclusion
As an IMAX movie Thrill Ride is very enjoyable and while the DVD makes a good effort at it, the experience just can't compare. Running only 40mins Thrill Ride felt very short and with only a small amount of extras out recommendation is to try to catch this film the next time it makes the rounds at your local IMAX.
