Sandra Bernhard: I'm Still Here...Damn It

The film:
"I'm Still Here...Damn It" is Sandra Bernhard's most recent stand-up tour, captured for an hour-long HBO special. It's an incredible performance, combining sharp observational humor with the occasional singing. What I really liked was how much of a free-flow performance it seemed to be, letting lose jokes and creativity left and right - I laughed a lot, and even when I didn't laugh, I still found it highly watchable. Bernhard's intensity and energetic performance style leaves you constantly wondering just what she's going to say next. Her targets and commentary include not only Courtney Love, but Melanie Griffith, Rosie O' Donnell and the pairing of Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand. Although possibly more outrageous is the rather revealing outfit she comes out on stage in, but who am I to decide.
Palm Pictures has done a really fine job transfering this presentation to DVD. The cinematography for this performance was done by Haskell Wexler, who has gained awards for many of his works, and has filmed such classics as "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". His camera work looks great in this presentation, coming through consistently crystal clear. The only problem is a very slight trace of pixelization in a couple of scenes, but definitely nothing distracting. The sound is 2.0, and it's fine for this kind of presentation. Everything comes through clearly, and the cheering of the crowd never overshadows anything Bernhard has to say.
The biggest and best extra feature on this DVD is the addition of about 30 minutes of scenes from the performance that were cut out of the final 60 minute show. These are included seperately from the main presentation, but you can choose to watch each deleted scene one after another. It's too bad that a lot of this had to be cut out of the final show that ran on cable, because a lot of it is extremely funny. Also included is a bio for Bernhard and some web links.
Overall, I felt it was a really entertaining performance and the disc is very nicely done. Recommended.
