The Movie

Let me be honest. I have only watched a few episodes of Farscape on the Sci-Fi channel starting this year. I am probably not the best person to talk about the series as I have not seen the whole thing, but from what I have seen both on this disc and the episodes this season it is quite a good Science Fiction series. Presented in this 2-disc release is the first 4 episodes of the 2nd season of the series.

Mind the Baby: Scorpius is still in search of Moya, the living ship. Moya is looking for her child, Tayln and has to go into Scorpius' realm to find him. Let us just say the child is not all happy to see his mother again. The crew also comes back together in this opening episode. It is a bit tough to just jump into the series like this, but having done some research on-line I felt pretty caught up by this point.

Vitas Mortis: D'Argo agrees to help an old holy woman, Nilaam, perform the Luxan ritual of death. Nilaam sees great strength in D'Argo and decides to harness the power to become young and beautiful. D'Argo falls in love and Moya is beginning to rapidly age.

Taking the Stone: Chiana is devastated by the death of her brother and she joins up with a gang of aliens that enjoy doing daredevil things which include jumping into a deep chasm in order to "take the stone". Crichton and Aeryn try to stop Chiana, but she decides to follow this group. Will she die taking the stone as many others have?

Crackers Don't Matter: The crew takes a shopping trip on a planet and run into a small, blind alien named Traltixx. He says he can make Moya undetectable, but the crew has to change course and go to his planet. On the way to the planet, the crew becomes very violent and paranoid. Is this the work of the Five Pulsars or does Traltixx have a totally different plan that what he offered?

Overall these episodes were quite good. It is nice to see some of the older episodes. Of course I am two seasons ahead of these episodes, so I really have no excuse. Overall this was a pretty good watch and hopefully I will continue to watch the series as they come out on DVD.

The DVD

Video: Presented in Full-Frame video. I did not see any bad video while watching the episodes. I am uninformed about this, but when did Farscape turn to widescreen as presented on Sci-Fi today? I am guessing it might be like X-Files where they started doing widescreen in the middle of the series. This series is very beautiful in widescreen on Sci-Fi.

Sound: Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0. The 5.1 mix sounds more full, although the surround channels are not used too much. This is a television show after all and the sound is not expected to have movie-type qualities. The sound is very clean.

Extras:

Disc 1: Deleted scene from "Mind the Baby", "Alien Encounter" text and clip of Nilaam, a biography of Ben Browder, the character backstory for John Crichton and 8 conceptual drawings

Disc 2: Full-length commentary on "Crackers Don't Matter" with Claudia Black and director Ian Watson. Claudia eats crackers while posing questions to Ian. It is actually pretty fun. There is also a deleted scene for "Taking the Stone", 7 conceptual drawings, a dictionary of alien slang with video clips of how they should be used and "Alien Encounter" clips and text for Traltixx and Molnon.

Final Thoughts: This 2-disc set starts off my viewing of the earlier episodes of Farscape. I know there are legions of fans for this show out there. I have not followed the series as closely as they have, so I do not belong in that group. I do enjoy this series as I do most of Sci-Fi in general. The extras are nice and are in the upper echelon for TV series in my opinion. Any extras you can get on a TV series is a plus in my opinion. Overall this is a great release and is easily recommended for Farscape watchers to pick up and people interested in the series, like myself, to pick up as well. Highly Recommended.
