The film:

Yes, Beavers. The little creatures are the subject of this IMAX documentary about a family of Beavers going about their business in Alberta, Canada - cutting down trees, making a house, or communicating with one another. While it sounds like a rather limited choice to base an entire movie on, it's actually really very entertaining. The photography is stunning, and with the limited narration, we understand what they're doing, but are allowed to simply just watch these creatures do what they do. It's about 30 minutes and it turns out to be far more fascinating than I'd expected. Again, the photography is remarkably well done - taking us right into the world of these animals.

It helps that Image has put together a really fine DVD in terms of quality. The sound quality is nothing short of excellent, with the sounds of nature completely enveloping the viewer and making them feel as if they're right there in the forest. The score also sounds rich and strong, filling the room. The video quality is great as well, but not without a few small flaws. Where there's no shimmering or pixelation, there is a mark or two on the print - but that's it. This is an otherwise beautiful picture that has gorgeous colors and looks wonderfully natural, almost three dimensional at times, even.

And there are also a couple of extras included on this release, as well. The biggest extra is the "making-of" documentary that lasts almost as long as the movie itself. The documentary, "A Big Dam Movie"(get it?) lasts about 27 minutes, and has quite a bit of interview footage with the director. There's also a number of scenes that show the IMAX camera crew at work, and also has interviews with these crew members talking about their memories of the shoot. Most interesting though, is the discussion of working with the stars of the movie - the Beavers. It's absolutely amazing, the amount of work and effort that went into the picture, and this documentary really takes the viewer into what went into the production. According to the documentary, "Beavers" is also the 4th top grossing IMAX movie.

That's not the only extra included on this disc, though: there's also an old black and white documentary on Beavers that lasts about 14 minutes. There's also a lot of text notes about Beavers, as well as director Stephen Low(who also directed the very popular "Super Speedway"). The menus are nicely done, with shots of the animals and audio from the movie playing in the background. The scene selection menu even has clips for each scene. Very nice work!

A fun, entertaining and educational movie with some great cinematography, I really enjoyed watching this documentary. The DVD is also excellent, with very strong audio/video quality, and some great extras. If you're a fan of nature documentaries, this is a really well done one that I think many will find very, very enjoyable.
