Two If By Sea

The Movie:
Although Sandra Bullock started her career strongly with "Speed" and "The Net", a few choices that were a little too cute for their own good came along soon after, including "Two If By Sea". Although in this case, "cuteness" is really the least of this movie's problems.
Bullock plays Roz, who's been dating Frank(Dennis Leary) for a number of years. He's a small-time thief who's planning to sell a painting he's just stolen. The only problem is, he's not much of a thief, nor is either of them terribly smart. In a movie where nothing's terribly smart though, they blend in nicely.
Waiting for the sale, they hide out in a mansion and try to keep things looking normal to the locals, which include neighbor Evan Marsh(Stephen Dillane, who is a fantastic actor in films like "Welcome To Sarajevo"). The great majority of the film revolves around the relationship between Roz and Frank falling apart, and the police looking for the two. As charming as Bullock is, and as funny as Leary can occasionally be, neither one of them manages to save this film, whose most positive aspect is the gorgeous scenery. With the silly dialogue and thin plot, "Two If By Sea" takes a long time to not go anywhere.
The DVD
VIDEO: A pretty superb 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer - there's very few flaws and the ones that do show up are really barely worth noting. The scenery (the film was shot in Nova Scotia) looks stunning, and translate really quite well to this DVD. Images are sharp and contain good detail. Colors fare well too, looking very pleasing, warm and natural, with no problems. Flesh tones are accurate and natural, as well.
There really isn't too much to complain about with this image - there's absolutely no shimmering for a very natural and watchable picture, and no pixelation. There's a mark or two on the print, but that's about it.
SOUND: Well, according to the box, "All New 5.1 Audio Digitally Remastered For Home Theaters", but still, "Two If By Sea" isn't going to offer anything too intense in terms of audio. Still, this manages to be a very pleasing experience with a rich score that sounds crisp and wonderful. Most of the movie though, is simply dialogue driven. Dialogue is clear and easily understood .
MENUS:: Warner Brothers is really doing an even better job with their menus lately. All of the menu screens are animated for "Two If By Sea", with scenes from the movie playing. Even the scene selection menu offers clips of each chapter playing.
EXTRAS:
Trailers: Trailers for "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", "Pacific Heights", "Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves" and "True Romance". And, of course, the trailer for "Two If By Sea", which shows the few funny scenes in the movie.
Featurette: A 7 minute featurette that's got a few very funny moments as Bullock and Leary are interviewed. Of course, there's a bunch of clips from the movie in-between, but there are also a few shots of the production at work. The interviews between the two leads are definitely the highlight. A little better than the average featurette.
Cast/Crew Bios: Like the new Warner DVD of "Chill Factor", the credits scroll slowly upward instead of being just a basic text page. The score also plays in the background.
