Pokemon: The First Movie

The Movie:
Yikes. I don't understand Pokemon, and I'm willing to bet that most adults don't, either. Besides being a student and spending most of my time working on this site, I do work part time in a video store(free rentals!) and every few minutes, a child drags his/her parent inside to go on the hunt for the latest pokemon game/gameboy/video/cd/cards/lunchbox/toy. They know all of the characters and have seen every movie. Every copy of the latest video(usually there are around 20) are rented out for the first few weeks.
Where did all the understandable cartoons go? The "Transformers", things like that that I watched? What is the difference between Digimon and Pokemon? Do I really want to know? The only thing that I really did understand was I was watching a 90 minute ad for the endless legions of Pokeproducts. I will give Pokemon this: it's popularity has gone on for much longer than I'd expected from it.
The story goes like this(at least I think it does, I'm still not quite sure): Pokemons are little creatures that are captured, and trained by their new owners to fight in battle against other Pokemons. A new and evil Pokemon named Mewtwo is created and must be stopped. It's up to a character named Ash to lead the Pokemons into battle. Again, I think that's what was going on. It's all strangely trippy.
Do I recommend the movie or not? Does it really matter? Kids will likely want it anyways, and I'm sure they'll be interested in the director's commentary included on this DVD. Before the film is the 20 minute "Pikachu's Vacation".
The DVD
VIDEO: The animation isn't anything to be very impressed by, but the DVD does present it very well. It's in full frame(originally presented in theaters at 1.85:1. Images are pleasingly sharp, and colors are consistently vibrant looking. There's a few small problems, including a scratch or two on the print used, but other than that, this is a pretty good quality image.
SOUND: I'm sure if you play the movie backwards, you'll hear "buy more Pokemon...buy more Pokemon..."(just joking), but anyways - the audio itself is really quite impressive for a kids movies like this, and most of the film offers up some very intense audio. Surrounds are used often and effectively, and there's some very solid bass as well. The Poke-dialogue is clear, as well. I didn't understand what was going on, but I enjoyed listening to it.
MENUS:: An animated menu complete with rather irritating sound effects, and some nice, although non-animated sub-menus that how the little Pokemon characters.
EXTRAS:
Commentary Although I'm sure that kids aren't going to be too interested in listening to the commentary, I actually found it pretty interesting and it did explain to me some of the facts behind the story. The commentary (with the director and producer) offers such facts as the original cast from the series was brought in for the voices of the movie. They also explain some of the different "attacks" that the Pokemon do, as well as how Pokemon are chosen to do battle. Not exactly facts that I've been looking to learn, but at least the movie made a little more sense after I listened to this commentary track.
Music Video: "Don't Say You Love Me" by M2M. Scary stuff.
Trailers: The trailer for this film, as well as a preview for "Pokemon: The Second Movie". I'm sure there will eventually be a "Pokemon: The 107th Movie" at one point.
Scenes: Short clips called "Ash's Journey" and "Origin of Mewtwo"
Also: A text section with the history of "Pokemon", a pokemon card, and DVD-Rom features including "virtual trading cards" and other goodies.
Final Thoughts: The DVD is fine, and basically, it's kids who are going to be watching this film, anyways. I personally found it to be a 90 minute commerical for additional products which made little sense, but I'm sure kids will want to buy it the moment it's released on video store shelves.
