Return of Martin Guerre, The
Audio: The audio on the disc is presented in both the original French, and in mono. The subtitles must be accessed from the menu screen as they cannot be turned on from the remote once the feature is playing. Overall, the audio platform as presented was pretty poorly rendered. Additionally, it sounded as though the mix regarding the highs & lows for the soundtrack were poorly preserved & transferred. The end result is a pretty awful sounding score. The soundtrack itself is rather depressing, given the time periods and the subject matter of the film however, it would have benefited from at least a Dolby Stereo presentation. The same "Tinniness" found on the King of Masks audio track is here as well.
Video The video presentation is almost as poorly rendered as the audio. There are a great deal of scratches and markings throughout the whole of the film. It also had a tendency to be quite dark in places. So much so that, in some places you couldn't see what was transpiring in a given scene. Lastly, the film is presented in a full frame format that closely resembled an SLP recorded VHS presentation rather than a Digital rendering. To make matters worse, the images were soft and never sharpened to any point of digital clarity throughout the whole of the film.
Extras: The only extras contained on the disc are production notes and biographies.
Overall: The Return of Martin Guerre is a great movie that is ruined by an awful transfer. If the folk at Fox Lorber, who produced the DVD could have put a bit more time into the rendering of the disc, it might have been worth having. Given the poor rendering on both the audio & video portions of the disc, not to mention the absolute lack of extras, you'd be better off renting the VHS tape at your local video store rather than buying this disc. However, if you can get past all of the technical errors and are a fan of Gerard Depardieu who is pretty incredible in the film, I might add, then you'll probably want to add this one to your collection.
