The film:

"Greatest Places" is an IMAX movie that was released to theaters in 1998, taking a look at several of the world's most fascinating places - among them, the Madagasgar, the Amazon river and Greenland. The cinematography is excellent, but there are general problems with an IMAX film taking a look at more than one place - and this film looks at several.

With the 40 minute running time severely limiting the ability to go into much detail, we learn only a few bits of information and see a sight or two before moving onto the next stop on our tour. IMAX films are simply more successful when they can stop and focus on one specific area rather than trying to spread information thinly across 40 minutes. Although it's pretty to look at, it's not much more than that. The narration is ok, but it doesn't add much to the proceedings.

The DVD

Slingshot has done a magnificent job on the picture quality of this IMAX DVD. The picture is absolutely crystal clear, and at times look almost three dimensional. Images are razor sharp and perfectly clean looking throughout the entire full-frame presentation. The sound quality is very, very good with some rich, deep sounding music from the various locations - it just isn't quite as successful in enveloping the viewer in the sounds of nature in the environments as some other IMAX DVDs that I have seen in the past. Very high quality, although I found the image quality more remarkable than the audio.

There aren't too many extra features included in this release; some web links, a photo gallery and trailers for other titles from the company. The one extra that I haven't found on any other IMAX titles that I thought was notable was the addition of an isolated score, which also includes ambient sounds. So, if you want to watch the movie without the narration, this is your best choice. Another fantastic addition is an additional audio track for the blind where an additional voice describes what's going on on-screen. Two very good features.

Certainly not the best IMAX movie I've ever seen, but the quality is certainly there, and I liked the addition of a couple of the extra features. Possibly recommended as a rental.
