Watching the biography, you get a great sense of how many people were blown away by Jimi Hendrix, during his life and after. Released in 1973, the film contains interviews with a great number of musicians, including Eric Clapton, Buddy Miles, Mick Jagger, Pete Townsend and Little Richard. The interviews are at times interesting and at times laughable (Little Richard). Family and acquaintances are also interviewed and the film does do a good job of giving viewers a sense of what knowing Hendrix must have been like.

Being a big Hendrix fan, the most enjoyable portions of the film, however, are the live performances, including a great rendition of Red House, a portions of Jimi's historic Woodstock tour de force of The Star Spangled Banner, Hendrix's performances of Wild Thing and "Like a Rolling Stone" from the Monterey Pop festival and "Johnny B. Goode". A true highlight of the film is a mystical rendition of "Gettin My Heart Back Together Again" which Jimi plays on a 12-string acoustic guitar.

While Jimi no doubt revolutionized Rock n Roll with his electric guitar, it is truly a treat to see Jimi playing on an acoustic. Watching the live performances definitely make you hungry for more but you do get a great sense of why Hendrix is so revered as the concert and performance footage that appears in the film is extremely enjoyable The film focuses mainly on Jimi's career, with little focus on his past before becoming a musician.

The film includes an interview from Hendrix's appearance on the Dick Cavett Show, where Hendrix talks a bit about being a paratrooper, but the majority of the film centers around the interviews of others about Jimi.

Extras: The DVD contains a preview for the film and has a short bio that you can scroll through, although most the information is in the film itself.

A bit slow in parts, chances are you won't want to watch the bio itself more than a couple times but the performances are definitely worth it. If you are a big Hendrix fan, it's worth owning....otherwise....definitely rent it.
