Review by Chuck Arrington | posted April 30, 2000 | E-mail the Author
Synopsis:
When the Klingon moon Praxis explodes, the Klingons are left without their key energy producing facility. Given this enormous loss to the empire, it is estimated that they have less than 50 Earth years of existence left. That is unless a solution can be reached that resolves the Klingons' current energy crisis. The Enterprise & her crew are volunteered to participate in what should prove to be an historic meeting between the Klingon Empire & the United Federation of Planets. A rendezvous with the Klingon Chancellor is arranged and sometime after dinner, the Chancellor's Battle Cruiser is attacked & the Chancellor is murdered. Seemingly by the USS Enterprise under Kirk's command! In an attempt to avoid an intergalactic conflict, Kirk & McCoy board the Klingon vessel to offer medical assistance to the wounded. When they arrive, they are shackled, arrested & taken to the Klingon homeworld where they are tried, convicted & sentenced to life imprisonment on the penal asteroid of Rura Penthe for the Murder of Chancellor Gorkon. In a race against time & without the Federation's aid, Spock & the Crew of the Enterprise will have to rescue Kirk & McCoy, find the true assassin & avert another even greater tragedy scheduled to occur at the United Federation of Planets next scheduled session. Star Trek VI is a non-stop classic whodunit! Directed by Star Trek II's Nicholas Myer, it's definitely a great Trek adventure!

Audio:
The newly remastered 5.1 Digital soundtrack is marvelous! I wonder how I ever enjoyed listening to the two channel stereo videotapes of this franchise?! Anyway, the audio portion of the film is greatly enhanced by the addition of the remastered Digital application. I have said it before & I'll say it again, the 5.1 applications for this franchise are simply amazing! There are a great deal of explosions, warping sounds, & some rather great scoring that benefit from the addition of the 5.1 experience. The soundtrack for STVI is not as good as that of STV but it's just as engaging & powerful. Simply put, the audio portion of this disc will make your Home Theater very happy! The surrounds & sub get used very well from the very beginning all the way down to the end of the film. Take it from me; the very beginning of the film with the destrucion of Praxis is awesome!

Video:
Now onto the not-so-nice part of the disc. The video transfer isn't up to the standards I was expecting given the work done on all the prior Star Trek feature film entries. Truthfully, it's a nice widescreen print but it looks a lot like a cropped version of the film released on home video a few years back. I can't technically explain it as i am not versed in the latest "tech-ese" regarding A/V however, i can tell you this print is nowhere near as good as it should be. There are'nt a great many flecks or any other very obvious mistakes other than the transfer itself. The best/worst (depending on how you look at it) part about the film is the addition of scenes & dialogue not seen in the theatrical release. A couple of them should have remained on the cutting room floor but, there is one scene where Starfleet is examining a plan to extricate Kirk & McCoy by force that's pretty neat.

Extras:
STVI's extra is a Trailer for the feature. Obviously, these films scream for Special Editions however, Paramount has yet to say whether they will revisit these discs & do them a la the Bond reissues from MGM. For more info on the Paramount Star Trek position, check out www.thedigitialbits.com I believe they have the most up to date info available.

Overall:
I have to admit that I really love this movie! I have seen it countless times & never get tired of watching it. The film could use some work in cleaning up the master video for any subsequent re-issues & the inclusion of "extras" "Bonus Materials" would be the only way to re-release all of these films. Personally, I'd really like to see a director's commentary as well as the wealth of supplemental materials that are out there for this particular film make it to the disc. A few years back I saw a great many behind the scenes promos for STVI in my hometown of Philadelphia, PA. So I know there's stuff out there. Somehow, we just have to convince Paramount that it's in their best interest to release loaded copies of these films. Maybe we can get a mailing campaign going! Look, if we can get NASA to name the first Orbiter "Enterprise", talking to a bunch of studio execs is gonna be a cakewalk! In the long run, STVI is really a great film that showcases quite handsomely, the graceful exit of the original cast. Technical flaws aside, I love it and think you will too! Definitely recommended.
