Darkwolf
The Feature:
Wow. Words cannot begin to describe how campy and awful the acting is in this movie. Take for example one police detective continually repeating the fact that his partner died tonight (he's reminds us of this fact every two minutes). But unlike other movies that I get stuck with every once in a while, I actually wanted to review this one; because sometimes it takes watching a truly wretched film to appreciate a good film (Reviewers note: I popped in "Frailty" to wash the nasty taste out of my mouth).
The movie opens up in a topless strip club. We see lots of boobs. A biker causes a ruckus, and the police come to arrest him. He's handcuffed, and thrown into the back of the wagon. He turns in a werewolf, eats a policeman, and escapes. And now it's up to a Playboy model-looking policewoman and the partner of the policeman to find the wolf!
I could continue you to bore you with this review, so let me break down the B-movie clichés for you…
Unknown actors spouting off bad dialogue… check.
Tons of naked breasts… check.
Bad Monster Make-up… check.
Overly complicated plot… check.
Lesbianism… check.
Tons of dead cops…check.
Video:
Fox presents "Darkwolf" in Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1. For straight-to-DVD, the transfer looks very good. Flesh tones look accurate, blacks look black, and the picture doesn't become grainy during darker scenes. The print is free of dirt, as well as artifacts. Overall, a very good effort from Fox for an awful movie.
Audio:
The audio is presented here in Dolby Surround 5.1 and Spanish 5.1. The soundtrack sounds good, consisting of loud gunshots, wolf growls, and a "thriller" score. I was impressed with how this played on my system. There are no audio dropouts, and the awful dialogue is crisp and clean.
Menus:
A static DVD menu offers the choices of "Play Movie", "Language Selection", "Scene Selection" and "Special Features."
Extras:
There are a few bonuses present here… First up is "The Making of Darkwolf" Featurette. After that we get a "Gag Reel". And lastly, we get trailers for "Darkwolf", "From Hell", "The Fury", "The Omen", and "Phantom of the Paradise."
Final Thoughts:
Jeez, this movie stinks. Avoid it unless you're really into boobs (and c'mon, who isn't?). But seriously, this may be worth a rental for fans of the campy horror genre, but for those looking for something worthwhile, then you may want to look elsewhere. Rental at best.
