Farscape 2.5
Farscape is a science fiction cable television series that chronicles the life of an astronaut, John Crichton, who's thrown into another part of the Universe by means of a wormhole. He appears in the middle of a space battle, accidentally killing the brother of an important alien commander just before taking refuge with a group of escaped prisoners of various species. As the series progresses, his life is turned upside down when he is given advanced knowledge of wormholes by an even more advanced alien race. This knowledge causes him to be hunted down by the dominant species of the region who think it will give them a strategic advantage against their enemies.
Movie: Farscape 2.5 is the last two disc set from the show's second season that details the events in the life of John Crichton and crew of the spaceship Moya over the span of 5 episodes. I'll list the episode synopsis for each to keep the spoilers down to a minimum. A word of warning: the episodes are not in order since the three episode arc was actually in between the first episode and the season finale. It would've been nice if ADV put a warning about this fact somewhere prominent so people who find out about this great series wouldn't worry about missing something (the show is told in a linear fashion where you'll miss a lot if you watch it out of order).
A Clockwork Nebari: "A brainwashed Aeryn and Rygel return from a Commerce Planet with a surprise for Chiana—two fellow Nebari to take her home and "mind cleanse" her as well. Chiana learns her brother, Nerri is still alive and now the head of the Nebari resistance movement." This episode showed fans that there was a lot more to China and her past than was ever suspected.
Die Me, Dichotomy:
"The neural chip Scorpius put in Crichton's brain finally takes over, turning him against our crew. Aeryn is forced into a deadly confrontation with Crichton/Scorpius that only one will survive." This was the season finale which left a crew member dead and John incapacitated.
Liars, Guns And Money:
Part 1: A Not So Simple Plan:
"A plan to steal loot to buy D'Argo's son Jothee from the Slave Traders goes terribly wrong when D'Argo is captured in the heist. The crew's attempt to rescue him is complicated by the arrival of Crichton's nemesis Scorpius." The old saying, "The best laid plans...", holds true here.
Part 2: With Friends Like These:
"Scorpius wants to make a deal: D'Argo's son in exchange for Crichton. A plan to use the stolen loot to hire old foes and rescue Jothee makes sense, until it is discovered that the valuable ingots are actually alive… and eating Moya!" The crew kept digging itself in deeper and deeper with things getting a lot worse. Rygel meets an old friend and Moya is crippled in order to save her while Crichton makes the ultimate sacrifice for D'Argo.
Part 3: Plan B:
"No money. Angry mercenaries. An injured Moya. And Crichton in the hands of Scorpius! Only an all-out assault has any chance of rescuing him. But even if Aeryn's plan succeeds, can Crichton rescue his own mind from Scorpius?" D'Argo's son now saved, the crew's attention turned towards saving Crichton and raiding the Shadow Depository in an all or nothing gamble.
Picture: The picture was presented in full frame 1.33:1 ratio and looked great! I saw no artifacts or other problems with it.
Sound: The sound options included 5.1 Dolby Digital or 2.0 stereo. Both were very solid and far superior to the original cable television presentation.
Extras: There were two short deleted scenes that totaled about a minute and a half. There was also the usual conceptual art, character background on Chiana, a biography of Gigi Edgley, a brief description of each alien met on each disc, a dictionary of swear words, and some trailers.
Final Thoughts: I have found the Farscape dvds to be an excellent value. They have some decent extras but the show itself shines on the dvd format enough that they are just the icing on the cake. The show recently ended it's run with a cliffhanger that probably was designed for a movie follow-up (this fan is certainly hopeful) but ADV deserves some credit for giving this series a permanent format for fans to enjoy. My biggest complaint here was the decision to put the episodes out of order in order to accommodate the three episode arc. As long as all the episodes get released on dvd, I can live with such minor inconveniences.
