Content:
While watching Dirty Pair, it constantly reminded me of one of my favorite anime classics, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Both take the same basic elements of a story and are able to turn them into something special. They both have the same vintage art style, both are space comedies that are primarily constructed of self contained stories, and both are a lot of wacky senseless fun with endearing characters.

Dirty Pair revolves around Kei and Yuri, whom are the top clean up operatives of the Criminal Investigations section of the 3WA (World Welfare Works Association.) The 3WA's job is to help the United Galactica Federation with different planetary problems of various proportion. To do this, they send "trouble consultants." It's here we meet Kei and Yuri, despite their 100% rate, they are 2 trouble consultants who have quite the reputation for leaving a trail of destruction behind them, usually costing the cities millions. Due to this, they are known publicly as the "Dirty Pair."

There is a very simple formula to the Dirty Pair series that is present in the entirety of Part 1. Each episode The 3WA is hired to clean up a very big mess, where Kei and Yuri are put on the job. They usually end up making an even bigger mess (hence the term "Dirty Pair"), while also saving the day. Normally I stay away from series' that are typically episodic, I like a good story when I dedicate my time to something, however with Dirty Pair I think it's appropriate.

When it comes to the episodes themselves, they vary case to case in terms of content. One episode revolves around a super computer malfunctioning and destroying the city through technology, and another where Yuri receives a mysterious message from her childhood sweetheart and they decide to investigate, this was a personal favorite of mine as it's one of the few times Dirty Pair treads into drama territory. Regardless though, every episode is a lot of fun.

Positives:

- Well told self contained stories.

- The main characters. Kei and Yuri were a lot of fun to watch!

Negatives:

- No overarching story lines.

- Age. It's expected with a series this old, Dirty Pair has aged pretty bad. Even with the remastering process, there is a ton of grain. Not a negative for me personally, but it's aging might be a turnoff for quite a few.

- No dub. This isn't a major deal as the original is great, but Dirty Pair deserved a dub, and again, this may be a turn off for some.

Video and Audio
The transfer here is presented in it's original full aspect ratio, but Sadly Dirty Pair has not aged very well at all. It's showing it's age with the animation style used, quite a bit of noticeable grain and some visual lines across the screen. Not saying it's bad at all, for it's age Dirty Pair still holds up well.

The audio track is the original Japanese Stereo and it's solid for the show. No noticeable distortions at all, it's quite smooth for a show this old.

Extras: - Clean Opening.

- Trailer for part 2.

- Trailers for other Nozomi/Rightstuf titles on each disc.

Disc 1 - Lost Universe and Rental X Magica.

Disc 2 - Ninja Nonsense and El-Hazard: The Wanderer.

Disc 3 - Shingu and Super Gals.

Overall:
While the Dirty Pair franchise has seemed to alluded me until now, I'm glad I've finally watched it, it's a fantastic show that every anime fan should watch. It's a classic anime series that holds up well despite it's age, it has 2 very fun lead characters, and a collection of 13 great episodes featured on this 1st set. Recommended.
