Movie: Fans of anime and fantasy alike should probably be aware of the Rayearth saga. In the television series, a dying world requests the help of three young girls to accept awesome magical powers in order to save it from powerful monsters. That version is released by Media Blasters (I own the two boxed sets) but today, I'm going to look at the Rayearth OVA release by Manga. As with many anime series, the same characters are used as well as similar settings but they're not in the same continuity-this is a stand-alone dvd. Comprised of three episodes, it tells of the three gals who are summoned by an ancient wizard named Clef to protect Earth when the leaders of his world attempt to destroy it in order to survive. The females are not prepared and must quickly learn their new powers which include summoning large deities (they look like monsters on par with Godzilla) to fight similar creatures controlled by what amount to the "bad guys".

Hikaru Shidou, a red head, is the first to get what amounts to a controlling device-a magic ovum jewel-and it allows her to control a Lion deity, Lexus (no relation to the car I'm sure). She's thrown into the thick of things before she's ready due to a wish she made by a cherry blossom tree to keep her and her friends together. She fought with Alcyone and her demon cat in the first fight.
Umi Ryuuzaki, a blue haired and emotional girl, gets a blue ovum jewel which allows her to control a water dragon deity named Ceres. When she's attacked, she nearly loses before the battle begins until she learns to control herself. She only learned to summon her powers after being attacked by Ascot and his shrimp monster, causing large amounts of destruction in her wake.
Fuu Hououji, a brown haired girl, is given a green ovum which lets her yield the power of the Windam, a large bird that controls the wind. She fought with Ferio and his bug monster.

Picture: The picture was presented in full frame, 1.33:1 ratio and looked dark but colorful. I didn't see any dvd mastering problems but at times the picture was a bit soft.

Sound: The audio choices were 2.0 and 5.1 English or Japanese (4 choices). Each sounded pretty good with the nod going to the 2.0 English track. There were also English subtitles.

Extras: The extras included the trailer to the show, a series of character biographies, a photogallery, and the typical Manga extras (trailers and dvd catalog mostly).

Final Thoughts: I preferred the boxed sets from the television series but this was interesting in it's retelling of the story from another standpoint. The two are not related in terms of continuity but the same general idea applied: three young gals who stand up to the bullies who'd destroy all that they hold dear. With the help of a few other characters, they accomplish their goals, although often at personal sacrifice. I've shied away from telling too much in hopes of limiting the spoilers but fans of the television series will want to at least rent this one. It's a bit fast and loose with the Magic Knight Rayearth saga as I know it but that shouldn't be a roadblock for the rest of you.
