Truman
The Movie: A comprehensive view of Truman's life, this DVD follows him from his humble beginnings on the farm to his aspirations of White House glory. We follow Truman as he becomes the local judge, assemblyman, vice president, and takes over the presidency and runs for re-election. With all the famous parts of his life, this movie leaves nothing out. From how he reformed the small town he grew up in to the infamous Dewey defeats Truman headline.
Truman is quite a good movie, provided it was made for TV (HBO) and kept me entertained throughout. The story is good, and easy to follow and the movie does a great job of getting inside Truman's personal life and recognizing the hurdles he had to overcome throughout his life. I enjoyed the movie and found it stimulating. Definitely worth the price of the DVD.
The Picture: No complaints here about the picture. It was presented in the standard 1.33:1 television ratio (of course it's not anamorphic), but other than that, there's nothing wrong with the picture. I didn't notice any problems with pixelation or shimmering, and the intensity and light throughout was constant. While it would have been nice to see this in widescreen format, such a recording does not exist, and we are left with the 4:3 ratio, and there's really nothing we can do.
The Sound: While this disc doesn't focus on sound, there are a few parts of the movie where the sound does take precedence and does so well. I noticed no problems with the sound and found it to be constant and reliable throughout.
The Extras: There really were no extras here (unless the standard scene selections and interactive menus are considered extras). I didn't expect it to have many extras, but perhaps some cast and crew biographies would have been easy to throw in on the disc. While the price is only $19.95, maybe $16.95 or $14.95 would have been more appropriate, even though this was a pretty good movie nonetheless.
Conclusion: In conclusion, you're pretty much buying this DVD for the movie alone, and I found it to be a good movie. There are no extras and it is presented in the standard 4:3 TV ratio. The $19.95 price is a little high for this disc, but not too high to prevent people from buying it. I would recommend this disc, but maybe a rental is more appropriate since the repeat viewings would probably not warrant the purchase of this disc and the lack of extras don't require you to keep going back to the disc for something new. A good movie, but perhaps the DVD could have been put together with a few more extras to keep it more entertaining.
