Movie: This dvd contained the final episodes of the Dai-Guard (Gekkan Ace Next) TV series from Japan. The series was about a group of young men and women who have more problems fighting a joint military/corporate conglomerate than they do large monsters from space that appear once each episode. Fans of well scripted Mech-Robot series will appreciate that the characters are usually much more interesting than in most anime series. One of the problems with anime in general is that the characters are one dimensional stereotypes so it's pleasing to see some depth in this well received ADV release. As the series progressed, the monsters became increasingly tough and the attacks more frequent, leading up to this final set of episodes. Here's what the box cover said: "So far; so good. The DAI-GUARD pilots have beaten back the enemy. They've saved mall after mall from certain destruction. They even found time for a tune-up. But the battle for the human race is about to enter its final stage and all of humanity is one breakdown from defeat. Can our trio of heroes go the distance? Who will be left standing and how much will their insurance rates go up? Will they be given a heroes' welcome? Or will they have to work overtime, holidays, and weekends? The only way to find out is to watch. The final episodes of DAI-GUARD are in your hands!" The following will contain spoilers:

Episode 22: So That I Can Remain Myself: Having taken a beating in their last encounter with the Heterodyne monster, the team is recovering after being rushed to a hospital. Ibuki thinks it's all her fault and does some soul searching with her doctor/ foster father. He helps her put the whole operation in perspective and she rejoins the team just in time to save them from the latest monster.

Episode 23: What Do You Want To Protect?: The team gets a short break from work and get to know one another better. Upon reflection, they each learn how much the team means to them as well as what they are fighting for-kids, quality of life, and family as much as anything. The day ends when they are called back to work but no major battles took place this time (a rarity here).

Episode 24: Something That Covers The Sky: Between their routine chores, the team has to figure out what to do with a Heterodyne monster that hovers in the sky. The military decides that it must be attacked since action is always preferred over inaction. Needless to say, their decision has grave consequences when the attack causes the creature to grow much larger than any of the previous monsters have done in the past.

Episode 25: Thoughts That Keep Piling Up: Much of Tokyo lays in ruins and the team awaits the military decision about what to do. A crazed Major wants to use an OE bomb (essentially a super powerful nuclear bomb) to kill the monster but it would vaporize Tokyo too. The Dai-Guard team and a military robot are given a chance to stop the menace first. But if they're successful, they'll plummet to Earth and die.

Episode 26: Victory Song For Tomorrow: The two teams learn the hard way that the Heterodyne monster is not going to go easily as it defends itself, first with large spikes and then with a large creature patterned after the Dai Guard robot (but faster). The good guys are damaged and if they win, they might fall to their death but if they lose, all is lost. Guess what happens in this, the series finale.

Picture: The picture was presented in full frame and looked great. The anime style was fairly solid and enjoyable to watch.

Sound: The audio gives a choice of either 2.0 English or Japanese with subtitles. Both were crisp and clear with no problems. I preferred the Japanese track but each was good in it's own way.

Extras: There was a clean opening and closing sequence. That's where the beginning and ending scenes are shown without the credits. There was a 31 page section of sketches. It also had some trailers for other ADV Films projects.

Final Thoughts: I really liked this series, at least the volumes I saw. It combined elements of Mech-robot fighting, human interest, and well made anime. There was character development, interesting ideas and a host of levels that the show could be enjoyed on (the subtle messages were more interesting for me than the not_so_subtle messages) which gives it lots of replay value. I kind of wish there had been another season of this one to watch but as it is, there are other series worthy of your time and money so enjoy what you have. Highly Recommended.
