Movie: I've always been convinced that there's an audience for every movie ever made, even if that audience is limited to the director or producer and it's cast. It doesn't matter if the movie is as bad as Plan 9 From Outer Space, or as good as the latest volume of RahXephon-someone out there will enjoy it. The sub-genre of horror that deals with rubbersuited monsters who attack poor young Japanese gals is supposedly pretty big too (or there wouldn't be so many of them made). That said, I watched a movie called Dragon Blue: Beneath The Waves...Terror Awaits. Oh boy was this a sub-genre release!

In the movie, a young attractive gal has visions of her ancestry that include belonging to a line of Dragon People with special powers used to banish demons. She goes to an island where a resort is being built to see if she can stop the carnage some demon is supposedly wreaking on the tourists and local population. Keeping in mind that she's in denial about her powers (well, can you blame her?), she investigates the murders with the help of a defective detective while being blamed by a local charlatan priest as the source of the problem. Yes, there's no logic in his attack on her but this is a cheesy movie, remember? In any case, as you'd expect, she eventually owns up to her heritage and saves the day using her powers. Here's how the boxcover describes this one: "When a beautiful young scientist arrives on a remote island paradise, she discovers more than just a new form of life. The horrifying truth about both her own past and an ancient legend are unleashed when young women all across the island suddenly begin disappearing, victims of a nightmarish creature that cannot possibly exist. Joining forces with a handsome detective, the scientist must surrender her body to an entity as old as time itself in order to defeat the hideous monster that lurks beneath the waves. An epic excursion into terror and the supernatural!"

Picture: The picture was presented in 1.85:1 Widescreen and looked pretty good for such a low budget cheapy. The special effects looked really low budget-I've seen student films that looked better-but that's part of the appeal for some folks.

Sound: The sound was in Stereo Japanese with English subtitles. Again, it sounded pretty good for the budget but nothing to write home about.

Extras: trailers

Final Thoughts: This is one of those drive-in theatre type movies that you went to "see" with a date. You know, the kind where you really didn't watch the movie as you were pursuing some backseat action. The acting was unintentionally funny, the effects weak, and the plot had loopholes you could walk Godzilla through but just because a movie is bad doesn't mean it's not without merit. Think of it as a Scooby Doo mystery (yeah, it's that bad) and you'll get the idea. If you watch this with a group of friends, after playing a bunch of drinking games, you'll all be amused as much as with anything else. There was violence, including rape and killing, and sexual content (breasts and some covered up sex) so you'll probably want to restrict it to older audiences (ADV considers it a 15+ rating which is the same rating they give to the far less graphic RahXephon and You're Under Arrest mini-series dvds). I'm suggesting it as a skip unless you're really into this kind of thing or are looking for a bad party movie to watch in a crowd where you'll all moan and groan at the movie.
