The Movie:

Tom Arnold had things going pretty well when he co-stared in "True Lies". Many were suprised and even shocked at how well he performed - the role showed he had a great sense of comic timing that he could probably make into a career. And then, suddenly, he dissapeared off the radar. Although "Big Bully" didn't manage to do much for his career, he's strangely perfect for the role of a a bully who terrorizes a young man; first in childhood, and once again as an adult.

Davey(Rick Moranis) plays the adult who is once again terrorized by "Fang"(Tom Arnold) when he comes back to his old town to teach in the local school. Fang is the shop teacher, and if the movie gets nothing else right, Arnold shows the joy of being able to torture Davey again perfectly, with almost psychotic glee.

Director Steve Miner("Lake Placid") and writer Mark Steven Johnson manage to work some darkly funny moments between "Fang" and Davey, but just when the film looks as if it's about to go too far, they pull it back into sappy territory. It's not a laugh-fest, but it does provide the occasional funny moment from Arnold.

The DVD

VIDEO:Warner Brothers has offered a very nice effort on their transfer for "Big Bully". Images are sharp and exhibit nice detail, and look nicely rendered throughout. Colors are warm and natural, looking pleasing and nicely saturated, with no problems. Flesh tones are natural, and the film occasionally displays some of the beautiful British Columbia locations.

Flaws are noticable, but not distracting. There is the occasional slight mark on the print used, an a couple of light traces of pixelation. No shimmering, and in general, the image quality provides a pleasing visual experience, which is pretty much to be expected from a movie that's only a couple of years in age.

SOUND: I really didn't expect much from the audio on this film, and actually, got a little less than that. Surrounds are barely used, and the sound almost completely is based in the front. Music doesn't make much of an impression, and dialogue is consistently clear and clean. Not much to it, but no problems.

MENUS:: Light animation combined with music from the movie in the background makes for an enjoyable opening to the movie.

EXTRAS: Cast and crew bios, trailer for "Big Bully", as well as for both "Ace Ventura" films, "Chill Factor", "Major League 2", "Stay Tuned", and "Wrongfully Accused".
