The Movie:

An odd little British teen film, "Virtual Sexuality" is mainly targeted towards girls, who will likely enjoy the lively and energetic performance from lead actress Laura Frasier, who fires out dialogue at a pace that suggests a little too much coffee. She plays a girl named Justine who's spent a little too much time in her own mind looking for Mr. Right. When a visit to a virtual reality machine goes wrong, she turns into the guy she was dreaming about. Sort of.

I can't say that I found much to the movie, or much to the characters for that matter, but I was almost shocked by the level of energy that this little Brit import has to offer. The cinematography fires down the streets of London with flair, and the film's almost cartoonishly bright color palette and production design is nicely done. The techno/pop soundtrack becomes a little too much after awhile, but either way it still manages to be a light comedy.

Again, if nothing else, it was interesting to see how another culture presents the teen flick genre. Although the characters aren't any more fully written than the majority of the teen films in this culture, "Virtual Sexuality" is a film that has energy to spare and a great performance from star Laura Fraser, who I hope to see in more films. And if nothing else, it's always great to see the marvelous scenery of London.

The DVD

VIDEO: There are some problems with Tristar's anamorphic transfer of "Virtual Sexuality", but I did like the look of the picture, which comes through fairly well on this edition. Images are sharp and crisp, and the daytime scenes on the streets of London look excellent. The color palette, which is bright-beyond-belief at times, looks very good as well, never bleeding or looking oversaturated. Flesh tones remain accurate, and black level is fine as well.

There are a few minor problems worth noting; there is occasional minor pixelation and a few instances of shimmering. The print used is in perfectly fine condition, with only a mark or two. Good work from Tristar.

SOUND: Besides the movie itself, the audio for "Virtual Sexuality" was really impressive as well. The pop/techno music comes through with solid impact, enveloping the viewer. There's quite a bit of surround use at times, even if the way they're used is a bit goofy on occasion. Although the accents may be a bit hard to understand for some, dialogue is clear.

MENUS:: A basic, but creatively done main menu that's sort of built like a computer. Easily navigated and very nice.

EXTRAS:

Cast Video Diaries: The cast members were given camcorders to capture each other at work, and the featurette here is the the edited result of their efforts - it's actually pretty funny. Strangely though, the clip is only a little more than a minute long and ends suddenly.

Featurette: A 6 1/2 minute promotional featurette for the movie that has interviews with the crew and the main cast, as well as some behind-the-scenes footage.

Trailers: Trailers for "Go"(1.85:1/Dolby Digital 5.1), which I considered one of the best films of 1999; "Can't Hardly Wait"(1.85:1/Dolby Digital 5.1), which was also a silly, but fun movie; as well as trailers for "Still Crazy" and "Virtual Sexuality"(both full frame/2.0)

Final Thoughts: "Virtual Sexuality" has some entertaining moments, but it's nothing terribly memorable, with Frasier's performance being the highlight. The target audience of teen girls will probably like the film quite a bit.
