Hitpersons Claire (Kyra Sedgwick) and Nick (Stanley Tucci) work for The Boss (Robbie Coltrane), but Duncan (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a slick accountant, is casting suspicion on all of the gang members, including the Boss's moll, Kitty (Robin Tunney). Also involved (though I could never figure out exactly how) is Dr. Wexler (John Ritter), an unctuous self-help author. Toss in a suitcase full of cash, that time-honored cliché of the genre, and stir gently.

The plot is a series of betrayals and killings, and while director Jennifer Leitzes handles some of those efficiently, the big action scenes and shoot-outs are pedestrian and silly. Good guys' bullets can go through walls; bad guys' bullets cannot penetrate a sofa. Also, she was either particularly enamored of urban aerial shots or she got a great deal on a helicopter rental.

The DVD

Video:
Image quality is mediocre at best. Tracking shots are unstable; dark clothes lose definition. In fairness though, nothing about the film really demands sparkling clarity.

Sound:
Dolby stereo is unimpressive. I found that I had to trigger the subtitles to pick up much of Tucci's whispery dialog. Again, that comes from the original production, not the transfer to disc.

Extras:
Three previews for "Montana," "Resident Evil" and "Snatch" are the only extras.

Final Thoughts:
Once more, Stanley Tucci proves again, without showing off, he can make almost any role interesting. He and Kyra Sedgwick seem particularly comfortable together and their characters strike the right sparks. Robbie Coltrane's haircut makes him look like David Lynch's lost brother. The other leads handle their parts well enough to earn "Montana" a qualified recommendation for fans of the cast.
