Best of Sting, The
Suffice it to say, If you're a wrestling fan then you've at least heard of Sting. There's a reason he can be considered in the conversation for "best ever" , he's one of the most iconic wrestling personalities to ever step into the ring, hence why he's typically referred to as "The Icon." Sting is such a popular wrestler in fact that his signing was the biggest piece of news in the wrestling world this year, in a year that included CM Punk's abrupt leave of the company, and The Undertaker's streak ending. Sting has carried two separate wrestling promotions on his back, and even helped one of them beat WWE (WWF at the time) in the ratings on a consistent basis. The Best of Sting chronicles the Icon's days in the indies all the way to the final day of WCW. Is this box set worth your time.
I'll cut to the chase and tell you no, it is not. The first huge problem with this set is that the interview portion doesn't feature Sting. The only signs of Sting that you'll find in the interview portion of the box set is archived footage, that of interviews from 1995 and 1998. This was a huge oversight on WWE's fault, no doubt they were just trying to rush a release through to simply cash in on the signing of one of the most popular wrestlers of all time.
Typically this is where I list the matches, but due to their nearly 35 matches, I feel this would be tedious. So I'll just list some of the more exciting bouts on the set that you should seek out.
The first two I'd recommend are the Ric Flair matches. Sting's matches with Ric Flair are iconic and for good reason. The first is a 20 minute classic from the Great American Bash 1990 and the second is from the final match in WCW back in 2001. The match with Vader from WCW Worldwide is worth checking into, although I'd say it's one of the worst matches the two have had together, but still good. Sadly there is only one match featured with Diamond Dallas Page, since those two always had great chemistry together. There are also a few good singles matches with Bret Hart, Randy Savage, and a fun 2 out of 3 falls match with Jeff Jarrett. All in all, maybe 10 good matches worth seeking out of 32.
- Positives:
- There are some good matches.
- Negatives:
- NO Sting on a STING DVD.
- The older matches weren't really cleaned up in the audio/video department.
- This set is a disservice to Sting, the fans deserved better with his official first box set from WWE.
Video and Audio:
If you've watched any WWE produced DVD from the last couple of years, the video quality for this transfer is the EXACT same. The newer matches on the set look crisp and the interviews look very nice with no noticeable noise or grain, it's the older matches that stick out due to their age. The grain is a lot more noticeable. The video quality is good, but nothing groundbreaking.
For audio The English 5.1 track was pretty clear. There wasn't really any noticeable distortions at all during the commentary or the fan chants. However, with the older matches from the 80'a it's to be expected due to age that sound is a bit more sketchy.
Extras: Overall: This set was obviously made in a rush to capitalize on his recent signing with WWE, you'd think with someone as popular as Sting is that they'd take a little bit more care with getting a product out instead of pushing one through the pipeline with a bunch of TV matches and no actual interview with Sting. I just realized I'm giving a higher rating to John Cena's previous DVD set than I am with a Sting DVD set, which is a damn shame, but at least they attempted to make a decent set for him. Rent it.
I'd say this DVD should be for diehard Sting fans only. They don't really cover why the Sting character is so iconic, as most fans should realize his character is every bit as important as his matches are, and this DVD set not only skimps out on covering his legacy but also they don't include the man himself into the interview.
