Titled Spike & Mike's Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation: Full Frontal the DVD features 30 animated shorts that run the gamut from truly inspired gross to merely goofy.

Spike & Mike's Festival has help launch and promote the careers of many famous animators including Matt Stone and Trey Parker ("South Park"), Nick Park and Peter Lord ("Creature Comforts," "Chicken Run"), Craig McCracken ("The Powerpuff Girls") and Mike Judge ("Beavis and Butthead").

Perhaps this collection will bring forth another talent although it is a curious selection mainly because it leans heavily toward recent animation yet it adds a couple of classics. Here is a list of the films with some opinions along the way. Note that the list of films is only in nominal order. I've gone through the 30 and put them in three categories.

Rejected (9:30) Don Hertzfeldt - Inspired work and in my opinion the best of the bunch.
Doodie.com (6:30) Tom Winkler - All sick and all fun all the time. Good website too.

The Challenge to Death (3:40) Juan Pablo Zaramella - Clay animation of a man and a blender.
Choke Spot Choke (2:00) Brice Beckham - Still animation with Dick and Jane and Dog.
Harry Pothead and The Magical Herb (3:20) Directed by Julio Calderon & Roger Campo - Harry Pothead…get it? Wears thin fast.
Maakies (1:40) Tony Millionaire - A Crow and chipmunk and the nature of death.
Pickle's Day Out (2:50) Marc Wilson & Robert Darling - Pickled refrigerator humor.
Beyond Grandpa (3:45) Breehn Burns & Jason Johnson - Not really that funny but a couple good bits.
Bambi Meets Godzilla (2:00) Marv Newland - You've all seen this. Worth a look if you haven't
Karate Dick Boys (3:00) Brian Bress - Odd little piece that gets better as it goes.
Slicks Magnum .44 (1:50) Bob King - Blacksploitation crossed with TV commercial. (Claymation)

Horned Grandma (1:30) Dave Foss - Disturbing Surreal piece with no real value
Happiness Is Licking the Frosting (:35) Bill Plympton - Plympton has done better.(Flash)
Timmy's Lessons in Nature (2:45) Co-Directors: Mark Simon & T.J. - More lame than funny.
The Death of Jackson Pollack (:40) Bill Plympton - See above.
Coco, the Junkie Pimp (3:30) Pete Metzger - Non animated short has few laughs or sick humor.
No Neck Joe II ( 4 Best of) (4:00) Craig McCracken - Not funny.
Dreamboy (4:45) Chris Romano - Something tells me a good drug would help me get this one.

Overall that's 14 YEAHS, 9 OKAYS and 7 NAYS.

Video:
Every short is in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and looks okay. Nothing special visually and, in fact, the older ones like 'Bambi meets Godzilla' looks really worn out. This is far from a stellar tranfer: there is a good amount of artefact in the shorts. Still the transfers of most of the films are not terrible and non are blurry.

Audio:
Everything seems to be in mono.

Extras:
No extras.

Overall:
It's about time that a collection of Spike & Mike's festival of Animation has made it to DVD. This is a good collection although it would have been good to have a real best of rather than a mélange of good and bad shorts. But maybe there are contractual problems with the old classics. As it stands there are more good shorts than bad ones. The best thing about the DVD is that these shorts can be seen again and again. Recommended.
