Steve Harvey Show: Best of - Vol. 1

The Movie:
Although Columbia/Tristar has shown some indication that they are planning more TV-on-DVD titles, "best of" volumes for sitcoms "Married...With Children" and "The Steve Harvey Show" seem behind-the-times. Fans of both shows will likely suffer further disappointment if/when the eventual full seasons of both come out, offering overlapping content with these releases.
Although I was previously unfamiliar with "Steve Harvey", I found that the show ran for a successful seven seasons on the WB before ending its run in 2002. Comedian Steve Harvey will be featured in the upcoming remake of the 1987 film "Can't Buy Me Love", while co-star Cedric the Entertainer has become a more widely known talent via his performance in the stand-up documentary "Kings of Comedy", the film "Barbershop" and his own Fox sketch comedy show.
To its credit, "The Steve Harvey Show" pulls a lot of effective laughs out of a fairly simple premise. Steve Hightower (Harvey) is now the Vice Principal and music teacher at the local high school, while former flame Regina (Wendy Raquel Robinson) is now the principal of the school. Although those two are the focus, the show surrounds these two performers with a cast of well-realized characters and talented performers. The show's humor is often good-natured and quite funny, but occasionally some of the one-liners seemed like one-liners just for the sake of one-liners, with nothing in the way of story advancement or character development behind them.
Still, this was a pleasant introduction to what seems like a very enjoyable show. Fans, however, will likely be displeased that full season sets haven't been made available. Episodes: That's My Mama, Welcome to Bernie's, Educating Piggy, Little Stevie Blunder, My Whole Left Side.
The DVD
VIDEO: These episodes of "The Steve Harvey Show" are presented in their original 1.33:1 full-frame aspect ratio. Video quality is fairly good, although there are issues scattered throughout the presentation. Some minor shimmering can often be seen, while some compression artifacts occasionally appear. Sharpness and detail, on the other hand, seem pretty satisfactory, while colors come across pretty well.
SOUND: Fine stereo soundtrack provides clear dialogue and occasional music.
EXTRAS: The trailer for "Bad Boys II" and promos for other Columbia/Tristar TV-on-DVD titles.
Final Thoughts: I found this to be an entertaining intro to a show that I never caught on television, but I tend to dislike these "best of" volumes, as they're occasionally replaced with full-season sets, requiring another purchase for fans.
