Rune Soldier - Adventure for Dummies (Vol. 2)
Episode 5: Inexperienced Extracurricular Lessons:
Louie, with his new magic wand, accompanies the gals and some young trainee priestesses from the temple on a mission to investigate ruins that are supposed to be haunted. The group discovers that the ruins are filled with nasty old zombies and when Louise and Melissa get separated from the group, the couple finds out that their respective talents are just enough to get them through the day.
Episode 6: Die For Love:
Melissa's old boyfriend, Conrad, shows up at the temple and wows the populace with his looks, charm, and other manly traits. Everyone is in awe of the virile guy except for Melissa and her champion, Louie. One thing leads to another and Louie ends up in a duel with Conrad for Melissa which is bad news for Louie (since Conrad is super talented with his sword). Melissa "knows" that the Goddess wouldn't have picked Louie as her champion if he couldn't prevail but feels uncertain as to the otherwise obvious outcome.
Episode 7: Merrill's Jar:
In the previous episode, Merrill acted as a bookie of sorts and let people wager on how badly Louie would be beaten up and/or killed. As the House, she couldn't lose and the end result was that she earned a jar full of gold pieces at Louie's expense. She gets worried that someone might steal her gold, being a thief herself, she knows the dangers of having lots of gold in one place. So she gets Louie to conjure up a Golem to guard it for her. Needless to say, Louie's magic causes this plan to fall apart quickly and her obsessive nature nearly causes her demise.
Episode 8: A Tearful Festival Of Mylee:
The town prepares to celebrate a big festival that only takes place once every five years and Louie is looking forward to it. Unfortunately for him, one of his professors gets ahold of him and tells him that if he doesn't catch up with his homework (by the looks of it, nearly a full year worth of it) and a special project, he can't go. Louie pulls an all-weeker (similar to an all nighter but for the whole week) and barely finishes in time. Falling asleep at every step, he goes to the festival and spends time with Melissa before a dragon attacks. Can Louie save the day and prove once and for all that he's her champion?
Picture: The picture was presented in 1.33:1 full frame. The colors were very bright and the picture sharp and clear. There were no compression artifacts and it looked great.
Sound: The audio was presented in English Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0 Japanese with English subtitles. Both sounded crisp and clear.
Extras: trailers, double sided dvd cover, paper insert with episode descriptions and art work
Final Thoughts: While the show will appeal to younger audiences on the humor alone, it also has a lot of subtle (and not so subtle) innuendoes going on that older anime fans will appreciate too. Strong female characters are not the norm in anime and the series gives that market niche a nod a great many times. There was a lot to like for fans of both straightforward fantasy as well as the spoof genre so in all, it easily rates my rating of highly recommended. I'd suggest you watch this series in order as the shows all build on one another but there was a good standalone value too.
