Some Kind of Beautiful is a "romantic" comedy. It stars Pierce Brosnan. From executive producers Remington Chase (Lone Survivor), Myles Nestel (Stuck in Love), Michael R. Williams (Welcome to Me), Some Kind of Beautiful is... "some kind of beautiful".

Richard (Pierce Brosnan) is a Cambridge poetry professor. He's hugely successful for some reason. He usually dates his students, including Kate (Jessica Alba). When he finds out she became pregnant with his child he decides to settle down with her in her giant mansion and settles for community college teaching instead.

Despite Richard's dad Gordon (Malcolm McDowell) suggesting he not stay with Kate, Richard decides that he'll give the relationship a "go". The marriage falls apart shortly when Kate starts to have an affair with Brian (Ben McKenzie). So Richard and Kate start to separate (but aren't yet divorced), when Kate's sister Olivia (Salma Hayek) comes to stay with them. Soon Richard and Kate start to fall for each other and begin a "romance" while staying together. Meanwhile, Richard also occasionally cares for his son, Jake (Duncan Joiner).

Will Richard and Olivia fall wildly in love with each other? And, in a sub-plot, will Richard be deported from the United States? Will Richard and Kate finish getting divorced?

This film is absolutely terrible in almost every aspect. The film isn't funny at all. It's supposed to be some sort of romantic comedy. It isn't romantic. It isn't funny, either. So it's basically just an all-around badly made film.

The music score by is by Stephen Endleman (Evelyn). This is a pretty weak score and it doesn't help the already poor quality of filmmaking. The cinematography is by David Tattersall  (The Green Mile, Star Wars: Episodes 1-3). It's actually one of the better things about the film.  In terms of production design, John Collins (A Merry Friggin' Christmas) seems pleased to use expensive locations throughout the film (and it seems a bit over the top). The costumes were designed by Lizzy Gardiner (The Railway Man, Mission Impossible 2)  and are effective for production.

Written by Matthew Newman and Directed by Tom Vaughan (What Happens in Vegas), Some Kind of Beautiful is a disappointing mess of a film. The screenplay isn't funny. The storyline doesn't work that well. The film is reasonably well-directed (though not that impressive) but doesn't succeed at being entertaining largely because of the poor characterizations and the ridiculously over-the-top scenario. Some Kind of Beautiful is a boring and cynical film which doesn't work and is certainly worth skipping.

Some Kind of Beautiful arrives on Blu-ray with a strong 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition presentation. The film looks stunning in high-definition with excellent clarity, depth, and detail. The film is in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.39:1 widescreen. This is a solid presentation with excellent color reproduction which preserves the cinematography by David Tattersall.

Audio:

The film is presented with a lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio presentation. The clarity is excellent through. The score is well represented on the release. The surround sound is quite minimal and the sound design is simple but the lossless sound quality is quite good.

Extras:

Inside the Heart of the Romantic (6 min.) is a short making-of featurette in which the stars of the film gush over it in-between clips from the movie.

Final Thoughts:

Some Kind of Beautiful isn't a good movie. The cast for the film is excellent but the screenplay and story isn't effective at all. The film can't muster up any good comedic moments (and it's definitely not romantic at all). The direction isn't terrible (but it isn't great, either). The cast (while impressive) can't save this poorly made film.
