JUDGEMENT DAY

Synopsis:

A giant meteor/asteroid is on a collision course with Earth. America marshals her greatest weapons & scientists in an attempt to avert certain disaster. Enter Brother Thomas Payne (Mario Van Peebles) a religious leader obsessed with the end of the world that believes this meteor will be the one to destroy the Earth & unite his people with their heavenly reward. As such, he kidnaps a top military scientist in an attempt to scuttle the military's plans to destroy the meteor. Unable to use conventional means to retrieve the scientist, the military enlists the aid of Matthew Reese (Ice-T), a felon serving 10 years for the attempted murder of Payne, in an attempt to retrieve the scientist & for one & for all silence Brother Payne. With only 68 hours to accomplish their task, Reeves must find the scientist & defeat Payne before; the great hours of Judgment day are struck!

Audio:

The Dolby digital platform as presented is in a 2.0 format. For a movie with as much potential for tremendous carnage, the audio that should have been but wasn't disappointing. Needless to say there is no center of sub or surround. Everything comes from both the right & the left channel. This would prove to be the first of many disappointing moments with this film.

Video:

The video is anamorphically enhanced but full of transfer errors & mistakes. The picture itself is attractive in certain scenes however, they are far & few between in their presence on the screen. There are more errors in the transfer than I can list suffice it to say, it's not the worst I've seen but it's pretty close. The colors are dull & there is so much pixellation in the blacks you wonder if someone remastered a VHS copy of the film for a DVD presentation. The video in the simplest of terms is just poor.

Extras:

There is a trailer for the film along with information on Asteroids, talent files & again rather inventive menus. Other than these items there is nothing that comes close enough to be called a special feature.

Overall:

This film is a cheap knockoff of Armageddon & Deep Impact. With none of the interest those films provided, Judgment Day does more than pale in comparison to those features, this movie just stinks. Mario Van Peebles dreadlocks were the best part of the film! Isn't that sad. Not even the acting or set design or script. Just his locks. If you remember Wojo from Barney Miller, he's here as an air force general (woefully inept as usual) From the time the film starts, till it's end, Judgment Day delivers nothing but aggravation to the viewer. Mario Van Peebles has been in just one decent movie in recent memory-Posse. Other than that, his films are generally a waste of time. Judgment day is no different. An appalling waste of time that stole from pretty decent movies & gummed up this film with poor acting & even worse dialogue & scripting. Stinking up the collection is what you'll be doing if you buy or rent this film!
