Spin City:Michael J Fox Favorites 2

THE EPISODES
Instead of giving us full season sets, DreamWorks has given fans two separate volumes of Spin City episodes selected by Michael J. Fox as his favorite shows (meaning fans of Charlie Sheen and the final two seasons will be left out in the cold).
In Volume Two, we get eleven of Fox's favorite shows, in which he plays Deputy Mayor Mike Flaherty. Disc One of this 2-DVD set contains the following episodes:
"Kiss Me Stupid" – An episode from Season One in which Luke Perry guest stars as one of Carter's (Michael Boatman) ex-boyfriends.
"Radio Daze" – The mayor (Barry Bostwick) squares off against a shock jock…and he and Mike wind up diving into the Hudson River (they actually did this for real!).
"They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" – Alyssa Milano co-stars as the mayor's daughter…that should be reason enough to tune in!
"Dead Dog Talking" – The famous episode that introduces us to Rags the Dog (the voice of David Letterman) and also features a guest star appearance by Conan O'Brien. This was also the kickoff episode of Season Three.
"There's Something About Heidi" – Four words: Guest Star Heidi Klum. 'Nuff said!
"Gone With The Wind" - Hey, it's even more Heidi Klum! Hubba hubba! Gee, I wonder why Michael picked these among his "favorites"?!
"An Officer and a Gentleman" - Lou Diamond Phillips guest stars as a childhood friend of Mike's, who admits that he's gay. Sure enough, he and Carter hit it off…and manage to spoof that famous Richard Gere movie in the process!
Disc Two of this set contains these episodes:
"Quest For Fire" – The Olympic torch is making its way through New York City…but what will the mayor's staff do when they lose track of the athlete carrying the flame?!
"The Marry Caitlin Moore Show" – Mike enlists the aid of a director to film the mayor's campaign commercial…unaware that the director is Caitlin's ex-husband.
"Goodbye Parts I & II" – Michael J. Fox's last Spin City episodes and the final shows of Season Four. Pay attention for a great Family Ties joke concerning the character Michael used to play on that series!
THE DVD
Video:
Presented in their original 1.33:1 full frame format, each episode looks pretty good, with rich colors and a nice sharpness to it.
Audio:
The episodes are presented in 2.0 Dolby, but sound very good, considering we're only getting a 2.0 track. Each show begins with an introduction by Michael J. Fox which is also in 2.0, but there is a noticeable difference in the quality of the audio on the introduction (which is lower) and that of the actual episodes.
Extras:
Each show has a brief Episode Introduction by Michael J. Fox, telling viewers why he selected it as one of his favorite shows. While Michael is quite entertaining, I must admit that it was somewhat painful watching him during these segments, since his Parkinson's ailment has gotten visually worse since the last time I've seen him on camera. The only other additional material on these DVDs are six public service announcements for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which are located on Disc Two and feature Michael and other members of the Spin City cast.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Spin City was one of the better sitcoms to air in the past ten years or so of television series, so I'm a tad disappointed that DreamWorks hasn't opted for full-season sets as opposed to these "Favorites" releases. However, with that being said, Fox does pick some of the better episodes of the series, and it was a joy to watch them again…and see a few that I missed when they first aired. If you're a fan of the show, you'll want to add this set (and Volume One as well) to your collection.
