My Life as a Dog

The Movie:

Nominated for an Academy award and winner of the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, My Life as a Dog follows Ingmar as he is sent off to his uncle's house when his mom becomes sick. This film follows Ingmar as he grows up, discovers girls, and experiences life one step at a time.

Combining great acting with a strong script that follows young Ingmar through his coming of age, My Life as a Dog is a great film to watch and deserving of the awards it won.

The Picture: Fox Lorber isn't really known for putting out great DVDs when it comes to picture or sound - this disc is no different. It seems as if they just took the 1985 work print and put it on DVD without any restoration or digitizing. The end product is a little bit lighter than would be expected and is not presented without its faults. Specks appear every so often and the brightness and contrast vary from time to time. Overall, not the DVD you want to bring out to show off your new TV.

The Sound: My Life as a Dog doesn't really rely on sound to move it a long, while some scenes did contain elements that could have been incorporated into surround, because the movie is from 1985, it is presented (in what I would assume is it's original format) of 2.0 Dolby Mono. Basically driven by dialogue, you don't really notice that it isn't 5.1 or DTS though, and overall, the sound is much better than the picture.

The Extras: Nope. No extras.

Conclusion: In conclusion, although the picture isn't spectacular and the sound definitely won't show off your DTS system, the main reason you'd want to buy this is if you liked the movie. And it is a good movie. The price is quite prohibitive though at almost $30 for a disc with no extras and only 2 languages and 1 subtitle. It's a good film, but the DVD could have been a lot better.
