Review by Adam Tyner | posted June 26, 2000 | E-mail the Author
Bad Manners is a film about mistrust and suspicion, beginning with the disappearance of a $50 bill when a musicologist and his young girlfriend visit an old flame and her insecure, less successful husband. Though the disappearance of fifty dollars may not be quite as exciting as, say, theft of nuclear secrets or stealing priceless diamonds, but the tension the theft creates and the events it turns in motion -- combined with great acting, well fleshed-out characters, and an intriguing setting -- make for an incredibly compelling film.

Video: Bad Manners features a very crisp non-anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer. Though a couple of the outdoor scenes look overly soft, for the most part, the image is very sharp and the colors are quite vibrant.

Audio: For a movie entirely driven by dialogue, the soundscape isn't overly interesting, but certainly functional. The dialogue comes through very clearly with no hiss or distortion.

Extras: Aside from the traditional cast/crew bios, an 18 minute "behind the scenes" featurette is included. The video quality of the featurette is rather lacking, looking as if it were mastered from an 8th generation VHS dub. The content isn't all that interesting, containing quite a few clips from the film and rather uninteresting interviews with the actors. Still, it's always nice to see supplements, even if they don't really warrant multiple viewings.

Conclusion: I can't really imagine anyone thinking Bad Manners is simply an okay movie...reactions are likely to be either overly positive or overly negative. Though it's not the type of movie that'll have the audience on the edge of their seats, Bad Manners stands out as one of the best movies I've seen this year. It's rare to see a film with such well-developed characters, great acting, and skilled writing, and the way Bad Manners leaves some questions unanswered was a refreshing change. Very highly recommended as a rental; recommended as a purchase.
