Movie:
Vendetta, a HBO movie, is based on the book by Richard Gambino, who based it on the true story of the largest lynching in American History, which occurred in 1890 in New Orleans, Louisiana. James Houston (Christopher Walken) is a wealthy cotton exporter who aspires to control the profitable dock businesses owned by Macheca (Joaquim de Almeida), who depends on two rival Italian families to run them: the Provenzanos, who operate the docks, and the Mantragas, who sell the goods. Macheca refuses Houston's offer to buy him out, leading Houston to conspire with the Mayor (Kenneth Welsh) to rid New Orleans of the Italian element, which would gain him control of the docks. Houston then plays one Italian family against the other, which culminates in the death of Police Chief Hennessy (Clancy Brown), who refused to go along with Houston's plan. The Italians are framed for the murder, and jailed. Houston's associates then bribe the witnesses and buy the judge, leaving the fate of the Italian community in the hands of Macheca's skilled lawyer, who is determined to find justice.

Picture:
Vendetta is presented in full screen, as it was originally aired on HBO. The print used contains a few marks and small traces of shimmer; however, these are not too distracting. The color is always vibrant, and flesh tones are accurate.

Sound:
Vendetta contains an English Dolby Surround 2.0 track and a Spanish Dolby Mono 1.0 track. The sound is quite good for a made for TV film, although the surround really isn't utilized. To be fair, the movie is mostly dialogue driven, and the dialogue is crisp and clean.

Extras:
Vendetta contains five cast bios and two crew bios, along with optional subtitles in English, French, and Spanish.

Summary:
Vendetta is the very moving true story of how one man's greed destroyed the lives of the Italian community of New Orleans, and is not to be missed for those interested in history or moving dramas. One of the best HBO movies I've seen, it's a definite rental and a possible purchase. Recommended.
