Cher: Live In Concert

List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]

Review by Aaron Beierle | posted July 5, 2000 | E-mail the Author
I'm not a fan of Cher's music, but I still find her to be a high-energy performer that puts on quite a show(for the amount that she gets per ticket, I would hope so...). In this concert at Las Vegas, she puts on a gigantic stage show, full of wild sets and even more out-there costumes. Although the glitz of it all is a little bit terrifying at times, Cher still goes into each and every song with a sense of fun and excitement, and saves this performance from being more about the sets than the music itself.

The Songs:
1. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
2. All Or Nothing
3. The Power
4. We All Sleep Alone
5. I Found Someone
6. The Way Of Love
7. Half Breed (Medley Pt. 1)
8. Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves (Medley Pt. 2)
9. Dark Lady (Medley Pt. 3)
10. Take Me Home
11. After All
12. Walking In Memphis
13. Just Like Jesse James
14. The Shoop Shoop Song
15. Dov'e L'Amour
16. Strong Enough
17. If I Could Turn Back Time
18. Believe

The DVD

VIDEO/AUDIO: HBO offers this concert in Dolby Digital 5.1, and although I wasn't sure quite what to expect, the sound quality is quite excellent. Many of the songs, especially the newer "Believe" have a deep, solid beat that really sounds excellent on this presentation. Audio quality in general is very pleasing, with the sound coming through as warm and inviting, rather than thin or harsh. Surround use is pretty much for crowd noise, but sound from all sides remains nicely balanced for a natural feeling of being front row center at the show. Cher's voice remains clear and easily understood throughout the entire show, as well.

The video quality for this HBO release also captures all of the overdone sets quite well; sharpness and detail are pleasing and colors are especially good. All of the bright colors are well-saturated and show no problems such as bleeding. There is a little bit of shimmering once or twice on this full-frame presentation, but other than that, I couldn't find much to complain about.

MENUS:: The menus offer lively animation as well as music from the concert playing in the background; sub-menus are not animated, but still do offer music.

EXTRAS:: I was pleased to see a few interesting additional features included with this release. Not only do we get to view the background clips from the show, but also included are a photo gallery, biography and a set of sketches detailing Cher's costumes for the show.

Final Thoughts: Cher fans or those just looking to see an intense and lively performance will definitely enjoy HBO's DVD.
