Review by Adam Tyner | posted July 16, 2000 | E-mail the Author
All of the characters from the classic board game -- Mrs. Peacock, Wadsworth the Butler, Mrs. White, Professor Plum, Mr. Green, Colonel Mustard, and Miss Scarlet -- played by a mostly-forgotten cast turn up in this overly silly adaptation that unsuccessfully attempts to straddle the line between comedy and murder mystery. Released (only to flop) around Christmas 1985, Clue's gimmick was having three different endings (coincidentally, Clue grossed three million dollars domestically) -- with different culprits -- randomly shown at different theaters. Clue just seems like a half-hearted effort, as if it were thrown together to make use of the multiple endings gimmick. It does have its moments, but Clue really isn't worth more than a single viewing.

Video: Clue sports a good (though not great) anamorphic transfer. Although its age does show a bit, considering its lack of theatrical success and relative obscurity, the quality of the video was better than I was expecting.

Audio: The mono track is lackluster, though not disappointing. An improved audio track might have me more excited about Clue, but the current track neither adds anything nor takes anything away from the film. A similar French track is also included.

Supplements: All three of Clue's endings are included, which can either be viewed together or one can be chosen at random. (If you choose the home video version, all of the endings are shown afterwards by default. Quite convenient.) The only other extra is the trailer, which surprisingly doesn't mention the multiple endings gimmick.

Conclusion: Paramount did a nice job with Clue on DVD, but it doesn't have much in the way of replay value. Recommended as a rental to those who want to see the alternate endings. Otherwise, it's aired on Comedy Central several times a day, so take that into consideration before plunking down any cash...
