The Original Latin Kings of Comedy

Opening Thoughts: Filmed in El Paso, Texas, at the Abraham Chavez Theater, the Latin Kings of Comedy is Latino's answer to the hit comedy tour "The Kings of Comedy" that featured Black comedians Steve Harvey and crew. The movie opens with Cheech Marin, of "Cheech and Chong" fame. Throughout the course of the movie, Cheech serves as the host. Essentially the show is headlined by George Lopez (from ABC's the George Lopez Show) and comic great Paul Rodriguez. Two lesser known acts serve as the openers.

The Movie: First up is former boxer Joey Medina from New York. I personally wouldn't go to a show just to hear him, but his stage time isn't that bad. He (like all of the acts), touches on many differences in the different cultures. After Joey, Alex Reymudo hits the stage. Alex isn't quite as funny as Joey and his time on the stage seems much short.

Now on the fun part of the disc – enter George Lopez. While I've never watched his TV show, I have seen some of his bits on HBO's "Inside the NFL". George's funniest bit is about growing up as a Latino and the nuances about childhood. George is funny enough to convince me to at least check his show out.

After George exits the stage, my personal favorite Paul Rodriguez is up. Paul has been dong this for years, and shows the timing of a savvy veteran. Paul, like George, hits on the differences in the Hispanic culture, traditions and families. Paul Rodriguez is always funny and doesn't disappoint here.

Audio/Video: The Latin Kings of Comedy is presented in 1:85 anamorphic video. The video is crisp and sharp with almost no artifacts. The audio is a 5.1 mix, then depends heavily on the fronts. The left and right channels serve as the audience participation sounds (applause etc.), and the center is where the dialogue comes from. The surrounds get little use. The music between acts is also funneled through the left and right channels.

Final Thoughts: Overall this movie is a hit. George Lopez and Paul Rodriguez headline a pretty good show. They are also the reason I would recommend this. The lesser-known comics aren't bad; they just aren't the quality of the headliners. Fans of Cheech Marin will be somewhat disappointed, because he's essentially relegated to a supporting host role. The DVD is also a winner, despite the fact that there are NO extras! If you're a fan of comedy and aren't easily offended by ethnic jokes – pick this one up. Recommended
