Woo
Woo is a story about romance between a cold-fish, selfish women, Woo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and a hard working law clerk trying to better himself, Tim (Tommy Davidson). Woo is told, by her transgender psychic friend, that she will meet her Mr. Right tonight but Woo is skeptical, given her recent string of bad luck in the dating game. She's drop dead gorgeous with a great body but her beauty belies her personality. It seems she's very opinionated and controlling and those are not her worst qualities. Tim gets set up on a blind date with her and quickly finds himself on the receiving end of her attitude and personality, even though he got pointers from his super stud neighbor (LL Cool J) on how to bed her properly. After a night of crazy antics, with Tim getting beat up, spat upon, and disrespected by everyone, including Woo, he ends up taking matters into his own hands, with very mixed results.
The movie used a lot of Director Mayer's standard gimmicks, loud parties in the big city, transgender characters, and obnoxious friends (as well as lead characters), as she explored the relationship between Tim and Woo. Had she done anything interesting with them, I might have even liked it as a slice of life movie rather than a comedy. As it turned out, the movie was very uneven with a lot of dead space that some judicious editing might've greatly enhanced (perhaps to make it a twenty minute short film). If you want a date movie about how terrible a date can be, with very little humor attached, this movie may even be worth a rental for you. I'm rating it as a Skip It, even though I liked watching Jada prance around.
Picture: The picture was presented with a choice of either a 1.85:1 ratio non-anamorphic widescreen or a 1.33:1 ratio full frame version, both in color. There was some pattern noise, minor artifacts, and grain but it looked fair for a low budget movie. The fleshtones were accurate when the lighting was decent but since it was mostly filmed at night, there were problems with that aspect of the movie too.
Sound: The audio was presented with a choice of either a remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround English track or a regular 2.0 stereo track, both with optional English subtitles. While neither choice was exactly stellar in terms of quality, there was some separation between the channels with the vocals and music fairly well defined. The music track was probably the best thing about the movie but even that was dated.
Extras: Trailers and a web link for DVD-Rom were all that came on the DVD.
Final Thoughts: Disaster date movies being a dime a dozen, I really didn't find much to like about this one, even though I've seen many of the cast do far better in other roles. I can see why so many people hated this one when it came out years ago and I doubt many of you will enjoy it beyond a few chuckles. The technical aspects of the movie weren't bad but the content was weak so only a glutton for punishment will get something out of this one. If you like Ms. Mayer's movies, stick with The Guru rather than watch this one.
