Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes

List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]

Review by Aaron Beierle | posted August 11, 2000 | E-mail the Author
The Movie:

Although the first two sequels to "Planet Of The Apes" were able to pose new questions and at least continue part of the magic of the first one, this one is somewhat less successful. It deals with humans treating the ape culture as pets, beating them or giving them other harsh treatments when they do things wrong.

Apes are angered by their treatment from the humans and prepare a revolt against the human race. One of the apes, Caesar, is the one who decides to lead the apes in the revolt. Once it begins, the battle turns violent and brutal, with the humans learning of Caesar's ability to speak.

The film is fairly well acted, and comes in at a somewhat quick 88 minutes. The battle sequences towards the end are well done, and although the story plays a big role in the tale as a whole, it seems to be begining to run out of things to say. With its smaller budget, the ape costumes are also less convincing.

The DVD

VIDEO: "Conquest" is presented, like the rest of the film so far, in 2.35:1 widescreen and is not anamorphic. The THX-approved picture isn't too bad, but it isn't quite as successful as the first three films are. Sharpness is generally good, but the picture seems slightly too dark at times. Detail is fair, and clarity remains average.

Colors are not quite as bold as the other films, but generally look pleasing. There are no instances of pixelation, but there are times where shimmering appears. The print used seems to be in good condition, with only a minor mark or two. Watchable, but of all of the films I've watched so far in the series, this is oddly the one that could be improved most.

SOUND: The film's Dolby Surround audio isn't too remarkable in any way. Mainly coming from the front, the audio is clear and never thin, with only some minor use of the surrounds throughout. Dialogue is clear and easily heard, as well.

MENUS:: Like the rest of the "Apes" films, "Conquest" has film-themed animation, including guns going off in the special features menu.

EXTRAS: Not a whole lot: trailers for all of the "Apes" films as well as a promotional trailer for the set. Also included is a small cast/crew bio set, but no photo gallery like the first two discs. A web-link is also included

Final Thoughts: Not the best presentation in terms of audio/video in the set so far. ONLY AVAILABLE AS PART OF THE "EVOLUTION" BOX SET.
