"Eurythmics: peacetour" is up there with "Stop Making Sense" as the definitive DVD concert release...perhaps even knocking the Talking Heads from that high perch. The 96 minute concert, recorded on 12/6/99 in London, includes the following songs:
  • I Want It All
  • Missionary Man
  • Thorn In My Side
  • When Tomorrow Comes
  • It's Alright (Baby Coming Back)
  • I Saved The World Today
  • Who's That Girl?
  • I Love You Like A Ball and Chain
  • Would I Lie To You?
  • Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves
  • 17 Again
  • You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart
  • Love Is A Stranger
  • I Need A Man
  • Walking On Broken Glass
  • There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)
  • Here Comes The Rain Again
  • Why
  • The Miracle Of Love
  • Peace Is Just A Word
  • Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
The performances are top-notch, although one quibble I have is one I also had for "Stop Making Sense"; at times, it seems as if there are a few too many people on-stage, and the backup singers can be a little overwhelming. Another is the extended speech preceding "Sweet Dreams", which would've been better kept at the end of the "Peace Is Just A Word" chapter, and perhaps the most annoying aspect of the disc is the long delay between menu changes. Despite a decade-long hiatus, the Eurythmics are at the top of their game on this disc.

Video: Sharp, vibrant, and colorful, as would be expected from a concert shot less than a year ago. Some bits look exceptionally soft, but this was presumably the way it was originally shot. The widescreen video on "Eurythmics: peacetour" is essentially flawless and is enhanced for widescreen televisions.

Audio: "Eurythmics: peacetour" includes both 2.0 surround and 5.1 mixes, and the 5.1 mix is absolutely breathtaking. Without a doubt, of the close to 200 discs I've watched, this blows the rest away. The 5.1 mix is completely enveloping, making me feel as if I were on the floor with the rest of the crowd. This is a reference-quality disc.

Extras: There are far more supplements on this disc than I would expect from a concert release. First of all, 2 songs ("17 Again" and "Sweet Dreams") feature 3 different angles, along with lyrics, a stills gallery, and a discography. The most notable extra is an hour-long documentary entitled "peacetalk" with interviews and music, including a number of intimate acoustic performances with just Dave and Annie. This documentary would've been worth the price of entry alone; tagging it along with a full-length concert makes this disc a must-have.

Conclusion: Arista has shown a strong commitment to quality DVD releases, and "Eurythmics: peacetour" is just exceptional. Though this disc is unlikely to convert anyone to the band's music, I can't recommend "Eurythmics: peacetour" highly enough. The disc retails for just $24.95.
