Initially a comedy series extrapolating the premise of a bored hero who could lay waste to any foe with a single punch, the comic's popularity swelled, and before long the series' momentum landed it in the mainstream spotlight. A new adaptation was commissioned, pairing the hyper stylistic visuals of artist Yuusuke Murata with the nonsensical plot. The series became a powerhouse, receiving nominations several awards including the prestigious Eisner Award.
Sporting a one-two punch (pun intended) of art and story, One-Punch Man<ir> gritted its way to the top of the shonen hierarchy, landing an a...Read the entire review

The animation looked absolutely stunning, the show had a solid team behind it, and it wins points for the simple fact that I absolutely adore a good dystopian/apocalyptic setting. The sad thing is though, is that apocalyptic anime are extremely hard to pull off correctly, with Now and Then, Here and There being the only one I seen that I'd consider excellent. There were others that I'd call above average like Blue Gender and Desert Punk, others never rise above mediocrity like Casshern Sins, and some are below par like the title in question, Coppelion.
At the start of the series, we're thrown right into the middle of the plot as we pick up in an apocalyptic wasteland in 2036. Would you use your newfound power for good? For Justice? Or would you use it for evil and punish those you feel deserve it??
At the start of our story, we're introduced to Light Yagami (voiced by Brad Swaile), a quiet genius who aspires to do something great with his life though feels like he's stuck in a boring rut. He finds the goings of the everyday person middling and doesn't find school challenging, always ranking the top exam scores in the nation. One day while sitting in class he spots out of the corner of his eye something falling from the sky. The reason being is Zetman is an extremely popular and critically well received manga by creator Masakazu Katsura (who also worked on another of Viz' titles, the fantastic Tiger and Bunny.) The manga had already produced 17 volumes by the time the anime went into production, so when I heard that this series was only getting 13 episodes, I knew they were gonna have to rush through it and could potentially be a disaster. With all that ground to cover and only 13 episodes to work with, the main question is does Zetman overcome the odds stacked against it?
As the story starts we learn about something called "Players", Players are a manufactured hybrid between humans and animals developed by a organization called EVOL, they set up underground fights where the Players rip each...Read the entire review

Several shows are already on the market, but you'll have to make room for one more. VIZ Media has licensed the series Vampire Knight for Region 1 and I just so happen to have the first volume in my hands right now. How is it?
Well, first of all let me just say that, yes, I said first volume. VIZ has opted to go for an antiquated individual volume release. That means you got a whopping four episodes on one DVD. Is that a bad thing? Not really, but it does leave you feeling very unsatisfied. Okay, that's enough of my jabbering on about the pros and cons (mostly cons) about the marketing strategy for the show. What's it all about?
Vampire Knight follows the exploits of a young girl named Yuki Cross, who su...Read the entire review

If so, then I may have just the movie for you. K-20, helmed by Shimako Sato, is a glossy mish-mash of far too many Hollywood productions for me to name (although I'll try). Oddly enough, it also represents an example of synthesis leading to creation. Sato has used borrowed parts to successfully assemble a summer blockbuster that just so happens to be straight out of Japan.
The events of the film are set in 1949 in an alternate vision of a world where the carnage of World War II never happened. As you can imagine, this means that things have turned out rather differently for Japan. The island nation is firmly in steampunk territory here as the stifling nobility system is largely intact while technology has continued to steadily advance. Why they continue to release individual volumes is beyond me, but one must assume that these discs are selling. Personally I'd rather get a chunk of episodes at a time, rather than four on one disc, but maybe that's just me. Whatever the case may be Shippuden is a blast so far and being able to see it in any form is a treat for fans of the first series.
I could go through the complete history of Naruto here, but in all fairness there really shouldn't be a need for it. If you're coming to this installment you know what Shippuden is and are probably well-versed in Naruto lore. If not, then check out the top part of this page for a little search box. It'll do you a world of good!
Since the fir...Read the entire review

The next behemoth to come from Japan is undoubtedly Bleach, which you've probably heard of by this point.
In Japan the manga is still going strong since 2001 and the animation has garnered over 150 episodes with no end in sight. On this side of the pond VIZ has been handling the show's release on DVD. Bleach can also be found on Adult Swim and if you step into an anime convention somewhere you'll undoubtedly see just how popular the series is thanks to all the cosplayers. Yes, it's safe to say that this show is the next phenomenon like DBZ and Naruto, but just what is it all about?
At its core Bleach's plot is all about souls. There is a heaven known as the Soul Societ...Read the entire review

Heck, all you really have to do is hit an anime convention and see how many cosplay characters you can pick out of the crowd. The masterpiece created by Masashi Kishimoto has more volumes of manga than you can shake a stick at and an anime with over 200 episodes. You just know going into a DVD release that you need to be vested for the long haul and thankfully VIZ's uncut collections capitalize on that.
While you can find DVDs of Naruto edited for the younger American audience the original Japanese version is by far the better of the two. After all, would you want to watch some watered down shadow or one that packs more of a punch? Punch it is!
Up to this point three volumes of Uncut Naruto have been released. During that time we have seen several epis...Read the entire review
