Rifftrax Live - The Room What is better than the Rifftrax group making fun of a bad movie? The guys tearing into a really, really, bad movie. For their latest Rifftrax Live event beamed into theaters across the US and Canada thanks to Fandango, the trio took on "the Citizen Kane of bad movies:" The Room. The film has gained cult status among connoisseurs of horrible cinema, and though the film is unintentionally funny on its own, it is amazing with the riffing. This was one a superb live performance with some of the best riffing they've done lately (and that's saying a lot).

Rifftrax Live: Santa Claus Theatrical https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/66861 Fri, 05 Dec 2014 15:09:56 UTC Highly Recommended

Just a little over a month after their last live event, the Rifftraxcrew, with the help from the good folks at Fathom Events, returns totheaters for a live broadcast of their Christmas Riffing special: SantaClaus. This is a Mexican film import by schlockmiester K.Gordon Murray back in 1960 and dubbed in English, and it has beenriffed on MST3K back in the day, but that version was edited and nowfans get to see the whole film (including the extended dance scenein Hell) riffed for the first time. It's a bizarre film involvingSanta, a demon who complains about his weak digestive system, and adance number with giant, horrific dolls. In other words the perfectfilm for the Rifftrax group to tackle.

For those who haven't run across Rifftrax before, the group consistsof Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy (all alumni ofMystery Science Theater 3000)...Read the entire review

Rifftrax Live: Anaconda Theatrical https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/66538 Wed, 05 Nov 2014 16:37:50 UTC Highly Recommended

The Rifftrax crew, in conjunction with Fathom Events, invadedtheaters once again on October 30th (with a replay on November 4th,the screening I attended) for their send up of the cheesy 1997horror film Anaconda. It was a good choice for apre-Halloween broadcast and a lot of fun was had by all whoattended.

For those who haven't run across Rifftrax before, the groupconsists of Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy (all alumniof Mystery Science Theater 3000). They create commentary tracks tomovies, both big-budget Hollywood specials and B-grade schlock thatare available for purchase through their web site, Rifftrax.com. The runningdiscussion at our house is which is better, classic MST3K orRifftrax, and the latter is a slight favorite.

As with all Rifftrax Live events, this one started off withsome great pre-show ...Read the entire review

Rifftrax Live: Godzilla (1998) Theatrical https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/65184 Fri, 15 Aug 2014 03:54:10 UTC Recommended

The latest Rifftrax: Live episode, shown in theaters across the country thanks to the good people atFathom Events, is a movie that was just made for riffing: Godzilla (1998). Yes, this is theRoland Emmerich/ Dean Devlin version staring the unlikely pair ofMatthew Broderick and Jean Reno. In other words, the one that reallysucks. With a largely nonsensical story and a lot of goofy plot points, the movie is well suited for the type of thing that Rifftrax does.

For those who haven't run across Rifftrax before, the group consists ofMike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy (all alumni of Mystery Science Theater 3000). Rifftrax Live: Sharknado Theatrical https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/65046 Fri, 11 Jul 2014 03:32:29 UTC DVD Talk Collector Series

On July 10th comedy fans were treated to another hilarious live eventbroadcast to theaters across the country by Fathom Events: Rifftrax Live: Sharknado. Taking onthe cult movie originally shown on the Syfy Channel, the Rifftrax groupof Mike Nelson, Tom Corbett, and Kevin Murphy (all alumni of Mystery Science Theater 3000)presented their funniest full-length movie send-up to date. The jokeswere flying by just as fast as the sharks, and the movie was made fortheir type of humor. Their DVDs and downloadable audio tracks aregreat, but there's just something special about seeing the guys pokefun at a movie in a theater filled with other fans. It's the best wayto enjoy what they do.

This presentation started out with their usual pre-show slides andmusic, make sure you show up early to catch them because they reallyset the...Read the entire review

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians Theatrical https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/62819 Fri, 06 Dec 2013 17:28:50 UTC Recommended

This past week the Rifftrax crew held their tenth live eventwhich was broadcast to theaters across the country by Fathom Events. This time they poked fun at that perennial holiday classic Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. The film had been riffed on Mystery Science Theater back in the day,but this version was totally different with all new jokes and gags. While the film is wonderfully goofy by itself, watching it with theRiffers made it even more enjoyable, even though this wasn't one oftheir strongest performances.

For those not in the know, the Rifftrax crew is a trio of Mystery Science Theater 3000alumni: Michael J. Nelson (head writer and host), Kevin Murphy (TomServo) and Bill Corbett (Crow T. Robot). They joined together to createa great series of downloadable audio tracks that could be played alongwith a film on...Read the entire review

[Notice: This review containsNO spoilers... if you haven't seen the special yet, feel free to readon.]

Fathom Events, a company that films special events and broadcasts themto theaters around the country, hosted a unique show on November 23rd(limited) and 25th (wide release). They presented the Doctor Who 50th anniversary specialin 3D. Mostly known for bringing world class opera productions andplays to local theaters (though they do more than that... like hostingthe RifftraxLive events) this, to my knowledge, was the first time theypresented a TV show. I was pretty dubious when I heard about it. Wouldpeople pay to see something they could get at home on cable? Even ifthey had to wait two days after it was broadcast? Yeah, the 3D...Read the entire review

Rifftrax, in association with Fathom Events, held another livebroadcast one week before Halloween. In honor of the season, theyriffed the zombie classic Night ofthe Living Dead. Like always, the crew did a great job flingingjokes at a solid pace through the entire film. It wasn't just a rehashof their earlier release... they came up with a new script for the liveevent and it was hilarious.

For those not in the know, the Rifftrax crew is a trio of Mystery Science Theater 3000alumni: Michael J. Nelson (head writer and host), Kevin Murphy (TomServo) and Bill Corbett (Crow T. Robot). They joined together to createa great series of downloadable audio tracks that could be played alongwith a film on DVD and featured the crew's signature barbed jokes andobscure pop references.
