THE MOVIE

With other actors in the parts, director Marius Balchunas' No Vacancy would be a forgettable comedy. However, one of the pleasant surprises about the film is how well-acted it is by the ensemble cast. Overall, it still isn't quite a good movie, but the actors turn a below-average script into watchable fare.

The movie takes place at a hotel where an odd collection of characters are staying. Christina Ricci stars as Lillian who wakes up one morning with a stranger (Deadwood's Timothy Olyphant) sleeping next to her. Meanwhile, a few doors down, two buddies (Steven Schub and Ryan Bollman) spend there morning with two hookers – whom they still owe money to, which will eventually lead them into a confrontation with their pimp (Robert Wagner, in an all-too-short cameo).

Other familiar faces in No Vacancy include 24's Joachim de Almeida, as the owner of the motel – who disapproves of his daughter's (Patricia Velasquez) intentions to marry a Caucasian instead of a Latino.

Given how many different characters and storylines are going on here, the movie is remarkably short – clocking in at roughly 83-minutes. Even at that length, No Vacancy seems to outstay its welcome just a bit. It's well acted, but never really funny or interesting, although fans of any one of the actors in the movie may want to mark this one down for a rental.

THE DVD

Video:
Although it's not specified on the box cover, the movie is presented in the anamorphic widescreen format at what looks to be the 1.85:1 ratio (although I suppose the ratio could be 1.78:1…as noted, the box doesn't specify). Other than being anamorphic, there's not much to praise about the transfer. There's an overall lack of sharpness and a very "soft" look to the video.

Audio:
The audio is presented in 2.0 Dolby and is also quite unremarkable, although there are no apparent glitches or other problems with it. It's one of those very average tracks that will neither impress nor distract the viewer.

Extras
Other than a chapter selection, the only extras on this DVD are a collection of four Trailers for the films Danny Deckchair, Stage Beauty, Open Water and A Slipping Down Life.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Although I wouldn't want to sit through it again, I can't say I was totally bored with No Vacancy, thanks mainly to the actors involved. While it shouldn't go to the top of your rental list, I'm still recommending this one for a rental – especially if you're a fan of Christina Ricci or Timothy Olyphant, who give the best performances here.
