In the late 80's and early 90's hair metal ruled the music world. As the musical tastes grew, so did the bands. Metal was replaced by grunge and music continually evolves. Rock has made something of a comeback lately by fusing with rap into a combination that mixes both styles to varying effect. Rock has also gone back to the angry stage that was created with punk and made popular again by grunge.

Bands like the Deftones, Queens of the Stone Age have continued to teach kids how to be angry and have a good time listening to music at the same time. As I watched the Godsmack: Live DVD (I'm not really a fan) I realized that metal may be gone (can you guess when I grew up?) but bands like Godsmack are easily taking its place.

More than a concert, Godsmack's live show consists of a Stonehenge looking stage (Spinal Tap anyone) and 4 proper looking rock stars. Mix equal parts angry lead singer with attitude, bass player that makes playing bass look cool, brooding guitar player, and backbone of the band drummer and you've got Godsmack. They're talented enough to keep the crowd entertained and put on a good show. They seem to like strobe lights, too.

Playing a mix of catchy, but hard, rock songs they make their way through two CDs worth of material and look good while doing it. The singer loses his shirt halfway through the show and there the requisite instrumental jam that pops up every once in a while. This may sound like I'm putting them down, but I'm not. I'm just older and realize these things are intentionally done. When I was younger, other bands could do the same and I'd be entertained for days. I still am and to an extent it's cool to see that kids are still pissed off and listening to the music that their parents won't like for the most part.

If you're a fan of the band then you likely already own the disc. Most of the songs I'm familiar with were present and sounded perfectly good. Not much for improvisation, they still managed to make the sound different that what's on the album, which is something some bands have a hard time doing. Songs like "Keep Away, Whatever, Sick of Life, Voodoo, and others are all here and sound great.

Video: The live footage is good quality that captures the light and mood of the show well. There seems to have been a lined filter applied to some of it that became annoying at times, but you're not really going to watch this anyway. You just want to hear the music.

Audio: The 5.1 Dolby digital sound sounds amazing. Their band has a perfect sound of raw energy and heaviness that makes music like this so great. Vocals, bass, drums and everything is perfectly mixed. The crowd and instruments are mixed to give a good depth to the rears. This is the reason I like concerts on DVD. The sound and depth can't be matched by what's on CD.

Extras: No extras on this disc.

Overall: A great disc for fans of the band and one that hard rock music lovers might appreciate as well. While not on the level of accomplished and long-lived bands like Rush or Aerosmith, the Godsmack guys can put on a great and entertaining show that's captured perfectly on this DVD.
