Mighty Ducks, The

The Movie:
Popular enough that it spawned a couple of sequels, "The Mighty Ducks" isn't a very original film, but it will likely succeed in offering moderate entertainment for its intended audience. Starring Emilo Estivez as a lawyer who finds himself coaching a local hockey team for "community service", it's the same story as we've watched many times (and with many different sports) about a team of misfit kids that, with the help of the right coach, find themselves headed towards a winning season.
Performances are acceptable, and the movie, like many similar kids films, is entirely predictable. It's the same kind of light comedy that director Stephen Herek has chosen with his later pictures, "101 Dalmatians" and "Holy Man". I don't find much to like about "The Mighty Ducks", but judging by its gross in theaters, many kids likely found it an enjoyable feature.
The DVD
VIDEO: This is a non-anamorphic transfer from Disney and it looks terrible. It's not completely unwatchable, but it's a harsh looking image with just about all of the various problems you could ask for here and there. Images are soft and lack detail, but colors are actually halfway decent, looking bright and vibrant.
The print used is definitely not clean looking, with some nasty marks and scratches on occasion. Shimmering and pixelation are noticable and distracting, and again, the picture has a harsh look with frequent flaws. Some scenes manage to look better than others, but at its best, the picture just looks fair. I'm not a fan of this movie, nor do I think it's a great picture, but I think it was a successful enough movie that Disney could have given some more effort here. Instead, they continue their dissapointing treatment of catalog titles.
SOUND: There's not a whole lot to offer with the audio on this film, either. Surrounds aren't used terribly often, but when they do find work to do, they are moderately effective. The score enters in occasionally as well, but doesn't make much of an impression. For the most part, this is simply a dialogue-driven presentation.
MENUS:: Non-animated main menus that are film-themed and easy to navigate. Nothing wrong with them, nothing much to them, either.
EXTRAS:: Not a thing, and Disney's "forced trailers" when you first insert the disc make a return appearance here.
