WWE: Summerslam 2013
Summerslam is WWE's second biggest PPV of the year after Wrestlemania, and has always been my personal favorite. The quality that goes into the card is usually fantastic and normally unmatched. Going into this Summerslam however, I was a bit hesitant because of an underwhelming match list. Man, was I wrong, I ended up getting my 2 favorite matches of the year!
Match Listing:
Bray Wyatt vs Kane (Ring of Fire)
Damien Sandow vs Cody Rhodes
Alberto Del Rio vs Christian (World Heavyweight Championship)
Natalya vs Brie Bella
CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar (NODQ match)
Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn vs A.J. and Big E Langston
John Cena vs Daniel Bryan (WWE Championship)
Our mid card matches were nothing special to watch to be quite honest and can be skipped without missing much, Damien Sandow vs Cody Rhodes could have been special, but they shortchanged them and only gave them about 7 minutes of in ring time. Bumping Rob Van Dam vs Dean Ambrose for the United States Championship is laughable when they give us something like Bray Wyatt vs Kane. Thankfully Summerslam 2013 is saved because of 3 matches, more than making up for the mediocrity of the filler matches.
The first of the 3 "main event" matches is next, featuring Alberto Del Rio, who has been THE main event picture for the World Heavyweight Championship for the better part of a year, defending against Christian. The story going into the match is simple, Christian feels his time is coming to an end as a wrestler, and he wants that "one more match", Christian has pinned Del Rio several times in the bouts leading up to this, so the outcome here is somewhat predictable. However that does not take away the enjoyment of the match itself, the crowd was into every minute and so was I, fantastic match up between 2 of the companies best.
Match of the year candidate number 1 is next, with CM Punk trying to get revenge on Paul Heyman and prove himself by taking on Brock Lesnar in a No Disqualification match. We get a 25 minute brutal fight that never slows down for a second. One particular spot is when Lesnar hits Punk with 3 consecutive chair shots, leaving bruises and welts all over Punk almost immediately. Punk and Lesnar prove here that they have insane chemistry together in the ring and left me wanting much more from these two. This is a must watch for any Lesnar or Punk fan.
Finally we come to the main event of the night. Match of the year candidate number 2, Daniel Bryan taking on John Cena for the WWE championship. With such a great build up in the leading weeks to this match I was hoping it wouldn't disappoint, and oh boy did it deliver. This is a near 30 minute straight up wrestling match on par with the Cena/Punk matches from recent memory. The match had everything a fan could want, quality wrestling, a hot crowd, in ring psychology, and an unexpected but brilliant finish. Daniel Bryan proves here why he is arguably the best wrestler in the world, while John Cena proves he can go with the best of them (even with an injured arm that requires surgery.) This match alone is worth the price of the DVD. To fans of wrestling, watch this match, absolutely amazing from start to finish. 5 star match.
Spoilers for the previous match...The PPV finishes with a "surprise" appearance from Randy Orton looking to cash in his money in the bank contract on an exhausted Daniel Bryan.
Video
The video transfer for Summerslam is great. While nothing groundbreaking, it certainly gets the job done for this release.
Audio Extra's Overall
Summerslam 2013 is PPV of the year, based solely on the strengths of the top billed matches, with a decent under card. Punk/Lesnar was everything I wanted in a street fight, while on the complete opposite scale, Cena/Bryan was everything I wanted in a wrestling match. Fantastic PPV. RECOMMENDED.
